PHNOM PENH - Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni arrived in Phnom Penh on Saturday afternoon after he had spent 4-week stay in Beijing for routine medical checkup and visiting his parents.

At the Phnom Penh International Airport, the King was cordially greeted by President of the Senate Chea Sim, President of the National Assembly Heng Samrin, Prime Minister Hun Sen, and the Ambassador of China to Cambodia Pan Guangxue as well as royal family members.

Clarification of article: “No plan to end Palace road block”, published in The Phnom Penh Post.

Please be informed that based on the article in The Phnom Penh Post in both the Khmer and English newspapers issued respectively on July 26 and July 30, I would like to make a clarification to the publisher that due to the traffic congestion and the high speed caused by all types of vehicles, the Ministry of Royal Palace made a proposal to the Phnom Penh City Hall to take the prohibition of traffic along the stretch of road in front of the Royal Palace into consideration.

Those speeding vehicles caused disturbances for guests visiting the King and both domestic and international tourists being entertained at the garden and visiting the Royal Palace, which is the prestigious heritage of Cambodians.

Sometimes the speeding motorcycle and car drivers use that stretch as a race track, causing traffic accidents, injuries and death as well.

Do NOT disturb the King of the Banana Kingdom ... he needs his eternal sleep!!!

No one batted an eye when the barriers went up ahead of the recent ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting, but weeks later, residents are scratching their heads as to why they’re still being forced to detour around a nearly kilometer-long stretch of Sothearos Boulevard that runs in front of the Royal Palace.

The answer, it turns out, is simple: the king is not a fan of the noise.

Heng Chantheary, director of Phnom Penh’s municipal traffic office, told the Post yesterday that the closure of the road was made following a proposal paper from deputy prime minister and Royal Palace minister Kong Sam Ol.

Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni departed here on Sunday morning for Beijing for his third routine body check this year.

Several Cambodian senior officials went to the airport to send off the King, including the kingdom's Prime Minister Hun Sen, the first Vice President of Senate Say Chhum and Ngoun Nhel, the first Vice President of National Assembly.

Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Pan Guangxue also went to the airport.

The decision to pardon three pedophiles in December “undermined the credibility of Cambodian efforts to combat child sex tourism”, according to the US State Department’s 2012 Trafficking in Persons Report, released yesterday.

Russian national Alexander Trofimov, also known as Stanislav Molodyakov, German national Alexander Watrin and Dutch national Rene Paul Martin Aubel were granted royal pardons from pedophilia convictions by King Norodom Sihamoni.

Collectively, they had been convicted of committing sex crimes against 27 boys and girls.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — Four Cambodian women imprisoned for protesting their eviction from the land where their homes once stood have begun a hunger strike, a rights group said Monday.

They are among 13 women sentenced last month by a Phnom Penh court to two and half years in prison for aggravated rebellion and illegal occupation of land. They claimed the government broke promises to give them new land.

The women were arrested when they tried to rebuild their homes on the land where their houses were demolished by developers in 2010. They lived in Phnom Penh’s Boueng Kak lake area, which the government awarded to a Chinese company to develop a hotel, office buildings and luxury houses.

The Housing Rights Task Force said the four women began a hunger strike on Sunday to demand their immediate release.

In Cambodia, land grabbing is sometimes linked to corruption and the use of deadly force.

This morning some 100 Boeung Kak community members and friends gathered at the Royal Palace to submit a petition to the King. A truckload of military police hid under trees in the vicinity, and at least 20 security guards in blue uniforms asked the community to stop creating “public disorder” and leave. Eventually, two community representatives were allowed to enter the Palace and submit their petition. later, the group proceeded to the Ministry of Justice to ask about progress in the case of the 15 jailed activists. The Ministry stated they had not yet received documents related to the appeal of 13 representatives currently serving 2.5 year sentences. (Posted at http://freethe15.wordpress.com)

The Cambodian King and his institution with their short sightedness and lack of courage follow in the footprint of King Father Norodom Sihanouk who defended Cambodia for his monarchy and the royal institution and not the country and her people themselves.

Hun Sen does not have to continue to threaten to abolish the purposeless and cowardly Khmer monarchy, it has already committed suicide.

Its physical existence remains for now, but it has no moral value and commands no respect from the rising educated young and old people of Cambodia.

Being afraid to accept even a petition from the children of Boeung Kak has dealt a deadly blow to this institution!

The royal palace has certainly no wisdom as can be seen by its decision and action. Perhaps all the angels surrounding the throne are too ignorant and useless since they do not even know how to help our hopeless king!

Cambodian authorities are working with Moscow to deport a notorious Russian pedophile arrested this week with an underage girl just months after he was pardoned by King Norodom Sihamoni following his conviction of sexually abusing more than a dozen Cambodian girls.

“Alexander Trofimov is being detained temporarily under our authority. The Ministry of the Interior has decided to expel him,” Minister of the Interior Khieu Sopheak said, amid talks between Cambodian officials and the Russian Embassy.

Trofimov was arrested in 2007 in Cambodia's largest-ever pedophilia case. He was convicted of buying sex from 17 girls between the ages of six and 13 and sentenced to 17 years in prison, but later had his sentence reduced to eight years by an appeals court.

In December last year he was pardoned through a royal decree following a government request made to the king through Cambodia’s council of ministers and released from jail.

Boeung Kak demonstrators left the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh disappointed yesterday after their petition calling for the release of 15 Boeung Kak lake residents locked in Prey Sar prison was not accepted.

About 50 villagers, flanked by supporters, marched to the palace from the National Assembly to deliver the petition, intended for King Norodom Sihanomi.

However, police rather than palace officials awaited their arrival and issued them clear instructions to disperse.

“I would like to ask [demonstrators] to leave five representatives here to submit the petition and others to break up,” deputy chief of Daun Penh district police Lim Hong said.

Yorm Bopha, a Boeung Kak lake resident and spokeswoman, said villagers had been too scared to leave the five representatives, fearing the police would arrest them – like they had the 15 prisoners the demonstrators were trying to free.
