The Sam Rainsy Party reacted against a Cambodian diplomat in Geneva who demanded that the UN remove Yash Ghai, the UN Special Envoy on Human Rigths in Cambodia, from his position.

This week, during a discussion at the trimester meeting on human rights condition in various countries organized in Geneva between 11 and 18 June, Chheang Vun, the Cambodian representative at the UN, reacted angrily against Miloon Khotari and Yash Ghai, both of whom are UN officials, regarding the human rights violation issue in Cambodia.

Chheang Vun said that the (Yash Ghai’s and Miloon Khotari’s) reports were exaggerated, and he said that he is determined to bring his complaint to the UN leadership to remove Yash Ghai from his position.

On Friday, Mrs Mu Sochua, SRP Secretary-general, said in defense to Yash Ghai and the UN reports: “The reports are true, therefore the SRP support (the reporting) of the restriction of the people’s freedom rights, land disputes, corruption, unacceptable justice system. The government reaction is not right. The victims who happen to be the Cambodian people, still continue to be victimized. I believe that the government should recognize the unfair and immoral actions taken by a number of government officials against our people, such as home evictions without paying proper compensation. The land-grabbing issue is true, there is no exaggeration to the truth, this (UN) report (by Yash Ghai) is correct.”
