Many abandoned Cambodian children who are struggling to survive have received help from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

As part of Pacific Partnership 2012, the Church donated medical supplies and hygiene, injury and school kits to help the Cambodia Children’s Fund Rescue Center. The center is located near a garbage dump where many children live and have grown up.

During Pacific Partnership 2012, nearly 100 Latter-day Saint professionals took a leave of absence from their various practices and donated a significant amount of time and skills to help heal people who don’t have access to medical care.

Seiha sat in his rented house in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, eager to talk with fellow LDS Church members, Chelsea and Tiffany, who were in Cambodia from Utah for one month to work in orphanages teaching English and helping the people in any way they could.

Seiha, his mother, older sister, her husband, their son and Seiha’s cousin/adopted sister, all members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, share a small, wooden-planked, one-room house that sits on stilts over murky water filled with refuse in a poor part of the capital of Cambodia. A Third-World country, Cambodia is recovering from the rule of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge — the Communist party of Kampuchea — in power from 1975-1979, responsible for a genocide that left 1.7 to 2.5 million people dead and depleted the nation’s population by 21 percent.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia -- Chhay Leang Suy, a high councilor in the church's Phnom Penh Cambodia South District, has been approved by His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni to be an advisor to the president of the National Assembly of Cambodia.

Suy is the first member of the church to hold such a distinguished position in the Cambodian government.

The Honorable Samdeck Akkak Moha Ponhea Chakrei Heng Samrin, President of the National Assembly, is pleased to have a person of Suy's experience and background serving his country.

In his position with President Samrin, Suy will be responsible for advising on city infrastructure, public health services and educational improvement. His term of service expires in July 2013.
