MP Ou Chanrith: "This is a society where we fight each other to survive. The Cambodia National Rescue Party wants to build a society where we share and survive".

Close to 400 villagers came from far away villagers, crossing two rivers. The district was a scene of fierce land conflict where several villagers were shot by authorities. The villagers will not forget that violence.

A woman came up to me and gave me a big hug: "you brought my daughter back from Malaysia. The company paid her salary and we are now united as a family . she is now engaged". A very moving moment.

Cambodia Failed to Listen to Seek Aung San Suu Kyi’s Wisdom on Democracy

‎"I have to study more about Cambodia democracy” Aung San Suu Kyi said according to Cambodia Deputy PM, Sok An. The D-PM interprets this as ASSK’s criticism of Cambodia opposition. The two met this week end at the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP).

ASSK knows more than anyone else not to criticize the opposition in Cambodia where democracy is taking a very critical step backward-now Cambodia is behind Burma on democracy building.

Cambodia’s ruling party that is in power for more than 30 years continues to fear democratic reforms by silencing the opposition and its critics. Sok An should have listened to ASSK and her wisdom.

Cambodia opposition parties’ request electoral reforms are once again rejected by the Minister of Interior.

The U.N. Special rapporteur on Human Rights will report in Geneva on 25 September. His report will include recommendations for free and fair elections in Cambodia.

Cambodia main opposition and a strong contender to the 2013 elections is sentenced to 14 years for crime he never committed.

Cambodia is currently Chair of ASEAN.

“The children were being squeezed,” Sochua said after the scene had quieted, explaining her repeated exhortations to police to “put the shields down”.

Vich Kim Chhon, 73, one of only seven witnesses out of a total of 86 scheduled to testify on the defendants’ behalf told the Post that he had travelled from Kratie’s Kampong Brama village to testify because he “never saw Mam Sonando go to Kratie province”.

“I can say that he doesn’t know anything about the plan to establish an autonomous area,” he said.

Sreng Pho, wife of defendant Kan Sovan, said that her husband had been taken away by police as he was bringing his daughter to the hospital to deliver her baby.

Hundreds of police to stop people from getting near the Phnom Penh court building.

My chest is in pain from pushing against police shields for hours this morning. We negotiated with the police to push their barricade inch by inch. We finally succeeded to move about half a block. before the UN representative helped. Some of the police men carry guns. We managed to find a comporomise: each side stood 2 meters from the police barricade.

The trial went on till llate and not yet over. The people stayed in the rain. I came to the opening of the party new HQ. What a day!

First Lady Michelle Obama's speech at the DNC is about core values and leadership. She makes me think and compare the leaders we have in our country. But also of the hard working mothers, teachers, nurses, all the "small" people that Cambodia's PM has forgotten.

When was the last time our civil servants had a raise?

Our people are in debt because health care is not free, education is not free, vital documents they need are not free.

Land is life but yet it is taken away from our people because it fits the greed of the few.

Core values defines a leader. Greed and the hunger to hang on to power define a dictator.

Michelle Obama’s speech Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention is getting rave reviews as a subtle but devastating attack on Mitt Romney, a heartfelt and gripping tale of personal struggle, and a warm and moving message that successfully linked biography to policy.

It also provided a telling if (naturally) biased examination of her husband’s leadership.

Without using the word “leadership” once (just as she never uttered the name Romney), the first lady delivered a powerful send-up of the philosophies that guide the president, the moral code that shapes his decision-making and the character that defines how he approaches his job. This did not come off as a transparent effort to humanize the candidate or to reach out to female voters—even if it helped to do both of those things—but as an authentic and genuine look at what she believes to be her husband’s vision and values.

Michelle’s effectiveness may have been her warm-yet-fiery delivery rather than simply the words on the page. That said, here’s my take on how she did it.

Prey Lang is life and a significant part of our indigenous people's beliefs. Protecting Prey Lang is protecting the rights of the people and communities to take back these natural resources that have been part of their lives for generation.

The current government has put an end to Cambodia's wealth in Kratie, Stung Treng and Kompong Thom provinces. Nothing will repair it but protecting what is left is more than crucial. Chut Wutty's death has not put an end to the people's activism but the scale of deforestation in the area is still of great concern and spreading to other areas. Only by changing the government can protection of Prey Lang begin.

Heng Hak wore a blank expression yesterday, her hair recently dyed a shade of blonde. Though her appearance suggested composure, a lift of her pant leg revealed the manifestation of the trauma she tried to escape last year.

In March 2011, Hak jumped from the third floor of T&P Co Ltd recruitment agency, breaking both her legs. She claims that the company physically held her from seeing her family and children, so she jumped in order to escape.

“I don’t regret jumping down, because to die in Cambodia would have been better than dying in another country,” Hak said yesterday.

The words came at a press conference held to draw attention to the lack of action taken on her 2011 lawsuit against T&P, a now defunct company that trained domestic workers for employment in Malaysia. She sued the company for illegal confinement, attempted murder and compensation totaling US$8,000.

Protection of Freedom of Expression and other fundamental rights is top priority for National Rescue Party, for a strong and vibrant civil society and media.

Good governance is about listening to what opposition has to say.

Preserving freedom and rights for our citizens will give the nation a chance to turn a new page and leave the Khmer Rouge culture of fear behind.

What needs to be questioned is the killing of villagers by government forces with order from high ranking officials. The minister of interior and provincial authorities approved the use of force in this specific case.

A new dawn for Cambodia is a nation that is built on aspiration and inspiration, governed by leaders who serve not the 10% but the full 100% of the people.

Radio Chief's Health Worsens

A Cambodian independent radio station head is suffering from breathing difficulties and acute diarrhea in prison.

Detained Cambodian radio station chief Mam Sonando's health is deteriorating and he has asked the authorities to allow him to undergo medical treatment out of prison, according to opposition party lawmakers who visited him Friday.

Mam Sonando, the director of Beehive Radio, is also worried about the future of his independent radio station without him at the helm, the lawmakers from the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) said after visiting him at Prey Sar prison.

Seven MPs from the Sam Rainsy Party visited Mam Sonando today at Prey Sar prison.

"I tried putting my head down to sleep but my head felt harder than the concrete floor ", said Mam Sonando to describe his physical health.

Suffering from diarrhea for the past week from food he consumed, Mam Sonando's physical health is of concern. He has made request for a medical check up outside of the prison clinic. This should be granted to avoid further complication.

"I have no regrets for I have committed no crime. My heart cries out to the villagers who are losing their land and my head continues to think of the management of my radio station", he continues with a firm but frail voice.

The prime minister's involvement in the case before the court's action has raised alarm and further targeting of human rights defenders about this Kratie case must not be tolerated. it is a problem of economic land concession that should be resolved by letting the people speak and make their own claims and not a matter for the court.

National Salvation Party will bring solutions to: land protection; security and justice to improve people's lives; major reforms to national institutions to serve the public. The will of the people is for Cambodia to move forward. The two candidates for premiership must have equal right, freedom and opportunity to compete on Cambodia soil for voters to hear, to ask questions, to challenge and to finally make their own free choice. That is the first step to put Cambodia back on track for long-term and sustainable development.

The PM used 5 hours in Parliament to defend himself. The people want to hear a debate. His usual strategy and tactic to "conquer and divide" is old and well-known. He is caught in his own old game.

The people are offered a new deal: the National Salvation Party.

The Ministry of Interior last week refused to grant a request from opposition lawmakers to visit jailed Beehive Radio director Mam Sonando, referring the request to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, Sam Rainsy Party and ministry officials said yesterday.

SRP parliamentarian Mu Sochua, who had hoped to lead a delegation of lawmakers to visit Sonando on Friday, said that the ministry redirected her request last Thursday and called the move an example of “the procedure in disorder”, adding that the Ministry of Interior was responsible for Sonando’s arrest and so responsible for prison access to him.

“If Mam Sonando is in Prey Sar, why should I go to the court?” Sochua asked, noting that the prison system is under the Ministry of Interior.

Sochua said she had never been asked to refer a request for a visit to any court, despite having visited prisoners in Prey Sar at least three times – most recently to see the so-called Boeung Kak 13.

The Appeal Court on Friday decided to restore prominent opposition party lawmaker Mu Sochua’s parliamentary immunity, despite it having received a report from Phnom Penh governor Kep Chuktema challenging Sochua’s “social morals”.

The hearing lasted about one hour, during which time she was interrogated by presiding judge Chuon Sunleng about her social morals since 2009, when her immunity was stripped to make way for Prime Minister Hun Sen to countersue her for defamation.

“Did [Sochua] make a disturbance to society under the penal code procedure?” the judge asked her.

The pointed questioning was in relation to a report from Chuktema the judge had received in which the governor said that in January this year, Sochua led opposition Sam Rainsy Party members to “incite 18 women being kept at Prey Speu centre to let them jump over the fence and have three vehicles to bring them out”.

“Mu Sochua always incites people to do any activity that is against the government despite having no immunity,” the judge read from Chuktema’s report.

Sochua challenged the relevance of Chuktema’s report.

“Having no immunity, I am still have a parliamentarian duty to protect my people,” the mother of three said.

Who do Cambodians consider as their heroes?

It’s true that in Cambodia, there are a number of heroes who are working and struggling. These heroes have to face danger, but sometimes, the Cambodian society cannot see their achievements and their efforts for the nation and the country. A Cambodian artist, Chantha Kong, and an American photographer, Tim Robertson, are trying to pull the public attention – especially foreigners – towards the achievements by 11 Cambodian heroes. Who are these 11 heroes?
