The net widened yesterday in the hunt for Nan Sy, the disgraced former Cambodian Ambassador to Brunei, with officials announcing that Interpol had tracked him to an undisclosed hideout.

Kirth Chantharith, a spokesman for Cambodia’s national police, said Interpol had joined the search for Nan Sy following his conviction in absentia in November for embezzling more than $430,000 of state funds he had been entrusted with to build a Cambodian Embassy in Brunei in 2008.

Nan Sy was charged on June 17 with embezzling these funds, following a complaint from Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong.

Interpol knows Nan Sy’s whereabouts and the place he is hiding. He will be arrested soon,” Kirth Chantharith said yesterday.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court ordered the former Cambodian Ambassador to Brunei to pay almost US$470,000 in compensation and damages to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a civil case, following his conviction in absentia last year for embezzlement of state funds.

Nan Sy, who was Ambassador to Brunei until May last year, was charged with the construction of Cambodian Embassy in Brunei in 2008, The Phnom Penh Post reported.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs dispersed periodic payments totalling $432,876.65 to Nan Sy to cover the construction costs, however in May last year the ministry received an unpaid bill from the company hired to complete the construction of the building.

Municipal Court Judge Te Sam Ang said that in the civil case against Nan Sy, the former ambassador was ordered to compensate the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the embezzled funds and to pay an additional 150 million riel ($36,909) in damages.

The former Cambodian ambassador to Brunei was tried in absentia on Friday in a civil case against him on allegations he embezzled more than US$430,000 in state funds.

Nan Sy, who was ambassador to Brunei until May this year, was charged with the construction of a Cambodian Embassy in Brunei in 2008. Despite the Ministry of Foreign Affairs dispersing periodic payments totaling $432,876.65 to Nan Sy to cover the construction costs of the embassy, in May the ministry was smacked with an unpaid bill by the construction company engaged to complete the building.

“Nan Sy has been charged with breach of trust and exploiting the state’s money,” Phnom Penh Municipal Court judge Te Sam Ang said on Friday.

A former Cambodian ambassador to Brunei charged with stealing more than US$430,000 from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was tried in absentia yesterday at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court.

Presiding Judge Kor Vandy said Nan Sy, who completed his term as ambassador in May, was charged on June 17 after it was discovered he had stolen $432,876 slated for the construction of an office at his embassy in 2008.

“He was a Cambodian ambassador who was a representative of the government in Brunei, but he had been involved with exploiting the government’s money for his own interests,” Kor Vandy said.

Nan Sy – also a former Funcinpec parliamentarian – was charged based on a complaint from Minister of Foreign Affairs Hor Namhong, he added.
