A directive issued by Hun Sen indicated that civil servants who are over the retirement age must take their retirement as soon as possible.

“To stenthen good governance and for the efficiency of the country’s management, all civil servants who reach their retirement age must be retired as stipulated by the law for civil servants,” was the announcement made in the directive issued by Hun Sen on 12 January 2009. This directive put an end to the derogatory practice whereby some individuals were able to hold on to their position beyond 60-year-old.

All civil servants are not inclined to go fishing along the Mekong River, some of them rather cling on to their government position, and they have a hard time leaving their job, once their retirement age approaches.

In the upcoming days, some departments will most likely see promotions (to replace retired people). It is also planned that “all civil servants, who reach retirement age and who are still not retired, must leave for retirement as soon as possible.”
