Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), the third major party in the National Assembly of Cambodia, said on Thursday that it will hold an extraordinary congress on Sept. 8-9 to strengthen the party for the general election next year.
The purposes of the congress is to choose the party's president, deputy president, secretary general, members of steering committee and members of national council, Mu Sochua, secretary general of SRP, told reporters here.
The congress will be held in Phnom Penh and about 7,000 members will attend it, she added.
The congress also aims to greatly improve the party's structure and set its political strategy, she said, adding that the party will select the members of parliament to represent for general election in 2008.
In the 2003 general election, SRP had 24 of 123 parliamentarians. The ruling Cambodian People's Party stood first with 76 MPs and the co-ruling Funcinpec Party with 26 MPs.
