According to reports from the various provinces and cities, the unofficial election results show that the CPP is leading in almost all the communes and it is followed immediately by the SRP. Funcinpec and NRP results fall far behind the CPP and the SRP, and they could take the 3rd and 4th place. The results from other political parties are negligible.
The Koh Santepheap newspaper reported that in Phnom Penh city, the unofficial results indicated that among the 76 communes, the CPP took the lead in 73 communes where its candidates took both the commune chief and commune councilor positions, however, in the remaining 3 other communes: Boeng Salang, Russei Keo, and Kilometre 6, the SRP is leading.
In comparison to 2002, the SRP appears to lose in 3 communes in Phnom Penh. Only 50% of the eligible voters actually voted in Phnom Penh, according to the NEC’s list. According to Xinhua, the Chinese news agency, on Sunday night, SRP declared that it took over 20 to 22% of the communes in the entire country, and the CPP admitted that it lost about 20% of the communes it used to control.
The Monday’s edition of the Sralanh Khmer newspaper which is close to the opposition SRP party, indicated that SRP took over approximately 28% of all the communes and sangkats, in comparison to 13% in the previous mandate. The newspaper claim that SRP could win in almost 30% of all the communes, according to the SRP information provided to the newspaper.
For other political parties, according to unofficial results, the NRP seems to be in 3rd position and Funcinpec in 4th. Because of the split in these two parties, the number of votes they received are far behind those of the SRP and the CPP. For other parties, the number of votes they received are negligible.
According to statistics, 102,266 candidates from 12 political parties have competed for the 11,353 seats among the 1,612 communes in Cambodia during this second election mandate.
