Does China want stronger ties with Cambodia or does it want to tie Cambodia stronger? That is the question.

Cambodia-China ties growing ever stronger

2006-04-06

PHNOM PENH, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Traditional friendly relations between Cambodia and China will be further strengthened by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's forthcoming visit, Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Hor Nam Hong said.

Hor made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Xinhua on the eve of Wen's two-day official visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Likening the bilateral relationship to a towering tree which has a mass of branches and leaves, Hor said he was confident that the friendship between the two countries would "grow stronger and stronger," and bring great benefits to the peoples of the two countries.

He spoke highly of the traditional friendly relationship and cooperation built and nurtured by Norodom Sihanouk, Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and other leaders of the older generation of the two countries.

Cambodia and China enjoy a long history of friendship and bilateral relations have been growing steadily in recent years, hesaid.

The royal government of Cambodia "always attaches great importance to developing special friendly relations with China, and makes it an indispensable part of our foreign policy," Hor said, "It serves not only the fundamental interests of the peoplesof our two countries, but also peace, stability and prosperity of the region."

He said King Norodom Sihamoni, the royal government and the people of the whole country were looking forward to Wen's upcomingvisit, which he believes is sure "to further enhance our two countries' traditional friendship and push forward the bilateral ties to a new level."

During Wen's visit, leaders of the two countries will have an in-depth exchange of views on regional and international issues ofcommon concern, and a number of documents on cooperation in the fields of trade, economy and technology will also be signed, Hor said. He also thanked China for its assistance to Cambodia in the past.

"The economies of Cambodia and China are complementary and theyenjoy great potential for cooperation in the fields of trade and economy," said Hor.

Two-way trade has grown rapidly in recent years, reaching 563 million U.S. dollars in 2005 compared with just 20 million dollarsin 1993. China's investment in Cambodia has also increased sharply, hitting 1 billion dollars last year.

"China has become one of the biggest foreign investors in Cambodia, " he said.

Hor said the royal government welcomes more Chinese companies to invest in Cambodia and more Chinese tourists to visit the kingdom.

On the issue of Taiwan, Hor said Cambodia had unswervingly adhered to the one-China policy since the establishment of diplomatic relations with China in 1958.

"We will never change this policy under any circumstances and never allow 'the Taiwan independence' force to carry out any form of separatist activities in Cambodia," he said.

The royal government of Cambodia "will never have any kind of official relationship with Taiwan," he added.

He also dismissed the so-called China threat, saying that historical facts have proved that China's development poses no threat to any country.

A stronger China will make greater contributions to the peace and development of the region and the world at large, and offer more help and opportunities for cooperation and development of less-developed countries, he added. Enditem
