Sam Rainsy calls his convictions an attempt to exclude him from Cambodian elections.
Cambodian opposition leader Sam Rainsy today blasted as “political” a Cambodian Supreme Court decision rejecting his appeal of a conviction for inciting racial tensions with Vietnam.
Rainsy, who lives in exile in France, was sentenced in absentia to a two-year prison term in January 2010 for removing border marking posts between the two countries in a protest the previous year.
He has frequently spoken out against what he has described as Vietnamese encroachment on Cambodian territory.
In a separate case, Sam Rainsy received an additional ten-year term for publishing what the Cambodian government called a false map of the border.
Speaking to RFA, Rainsy called the top court’s ruling “purely a political decision” and declared that France would likely refuse a Cambodian government request to extradite him to serve his jail term in Cambodia.
Upcoming election
Rights groups and Sam Rainsy’s own party have described the convictions as ploys to prevent the outspoken politician from contesting Cambodia’s next national election, which will be held in 2013.
He is widely viewed as the main rival to Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen, 59.
Expressing confidence in a favorable resolution of his case ahead of the election, Rainsy called for a “political solution” between his party and the government.
“There must be a political solution, as I have experienced cases like this many times before.”
“The government has used the courts to pressure me, but ultimately there will be a solution,” he said.

Sam Rainsy may be a good man and has good intention, but he is no hero he is a coward in my book.
The definition of a Hero means: a figure in Mythology and legend renowned for great strength, courage and daring.
Sam Rainsy tucked his tail and ran when he was confronted with jail time. He rather let people supported him take his jail time instead. He ran around barking to all the international canines for support to get him back into his own lost political arena, which none of the main donor country care to listen to his outcry. And he only gets support from his own political party people who are dumb enough not to see the truth. These people are uneducated and those who want to be recognized in the political arena for their future personal gain.
Mou Sochhua should be named a hero instead. She stood her ground and fought for what she believed (although I don't think suing the PM was a smart move for her) but she did it and did not fear of jail time. Now that is strength, courage and daring. Now that is good leadership role model.
People need to open their eyes and accept the truth. Don't do like: A Cheiy Thleak Teuk Hay ER Hay ER!

Mike sounds like western name. But this westerner is so blind.
It is not that Mr. Rainsy wants to be a leader, it is more that the majority of Cambodian people need him to lead. There are not many capable Khmer leaders, most of whom whose heads are sold to Viet. The two of you are either Viet or Viet's brain.
One of you said why not Rainsy stay and let be jailed.
1- Mr. Rainsy did not commit the crime.
2- Why not Hun Sen challenge with Pol Pot and take down Pol Pot without going to seek help from Yuon and owe them gratitude.
3- Why don't you ask Sihanouk- Why not he come to Cambodia when invited by Lon Nol in 1970 but went to China instead.
4- Why not Sihanouk is accused of incitement when he mobilized the Khmer Rouge against Lon Nol.
5- Why don't you ask your god-or dog- Hun Sen- how much money and property he and his family have, and where did the money come from when Cambodia government lives mostly on international welfare money.
6- Why don't you ask your god -dog- Hun Sen how big is his house.
7- Mr. Rainsy and his wife make about $2000.00 a month being the Cambodia assemblymen. The two can make 5 times more than that if they work for private sectors because they have the real education. The wife and husband dedicated their life for the country.
8- Mr. Sam Rainsy defend our country from being swallowed by Yuon. He risk his life. he is a Khmer Hero.
