Cambodia, Vietnam to build cross-border golf course
PHNOM PENH, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Cambodia and Vietnam are going to build a $100 million golf course straddling their border in a region heavily bombed by U.S. forces in their anti-communist war in the 1960s and 70s, officials said on Wednesday.
The "Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Golf Resort" to be developed jointly by Cambodia's Bada Investment Co. and a Malaysian firm called VXL will take five years to build and will have nine holes in each country, as well as a 450-room five-star hotel.
A helicopter service will be able to carry visitors from Cambodia's famed Angkor Wat temples to the resort, tourism minister Thong Khon said.
"After visiting Angkor, they can play golf before heading to swim at the beaches," he told Reuters.
Cambodia leased five islands in the Gulf of Thailand for $627 million to six local companies and foreign investors to build tourist resorts. It now has two golf courses near Phnom Penh and two near Angkor.
The southeast Asian nation is fast putting the legacy of Pol Pot's Killing Fields behind it, with economic growth in last two years at around 10 percent and foreign visitors climbing rapidly to the 2 million-a-year mark.

Cambodia to place more border poles with Vietnam, Laos [-No independent obervers allowed to survey these border markers]

Cambodia will have more than 350 border demarcation poles in place along the Vietnamese border and 86 percent of the border with Laos will be marked by the end of 2008, according to Border Commission Director Var Kim Hong, local media said on Friday.
Speaking outside the new National Assembly building, the director claimed that Cambodia's plan to erect the poles along the 1,270-km-long border with neighboring Vietnam will cost approximately 16 million U.S. dollars, reported Cambodian-language newspaper the Kampuchea Thmey.
Kim Hong added that more than 100 border demarcation poles will be erected along the country's 540-km-long border with Laos.
"Everything about the border demarcation process is going smooth with Vietnam and Laos but we need some more time to do the work," he said.
Var Kim Hong presented the border demarcation plan at the National Assembly on Thursday, in response to the demand raised by some lawmakers who believed that the kingdom couldn't finish all the work by the end 0f 2008 as it planned.

Border guards from Vietnam 's southern Binh Phuoc province and the police department of Cambodia 's Kratie province have met to discuss coordination in safeguarding border security.
The Vietnam News Agency reported from Binh Phuoc province that high on the agenda will be the exchange of information relating to security, social order and cross-border crimes as well as deployment of joint patrols.
Both sides reviewed their work since the beginning of this year and signed an action plan for future cooperation.
The two forces held regular meetings in the past six months to work out solutions to the problems relating to border security and cross-border crimes.

HCM CITY — Experts from Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia have identified the exact location where the three countries’ borders meet during a conference this week in HCM City.
The position will now be marked with a border post as agreed to by each party.
Nguyen Hong Thao, head of the Department for the Western Border under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Border Commission, led the Vietnamese delegation.
Thao said delegates embraced feelings of solidarity, friendship and mutual understanding and all sides agreed on principles and basis for the demarcation.
They also discussed how to implement and co-ordinate plans in the future to complete marking this border point by the middle of 2008.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this effort was significant in further completing border demarcation programmes among the three countries and also contributed to the Programme for the Development Triangle Cambodia-Laos-Viet Nam initiated by the three countries’ Prime Ministers last August.
