Chinese Red Cross donates 146 water pumps to Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Red Cross Society of China on Thursday donated 146 water pumps worth 200,000 U.S. dollars to Cambodian Red Cross to help those provinces hit hard by floods last year.

The hand-over ceremony was presided over by Annie Sok An, the first vice president of Cambodian Red Cross, and Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Pan Guangxue.

Annie Sok An expressed her gratitude to the Chinese Red Cross and the Chinese people, saying that their selfless help to Cambodia will significantly improve Cambodian people's standard of living and enhance Sino-Cambodian ties.

Women from Borei Keila who escaped Prey Speu social affairs centre on Wednesday broke down and wept this morning in front of family and supporters as they made another plea for housing at a press conference at rights group Licadho’s Phnom Penh headquarters.

Armed with copies of a Borei Keila construction agreement from 2004 thumbprinted by village representatives, development firm Phan Imex and municipal officials, women spoke of their detainment and called on Prime Minister Hun Sen and the Cambodian Red Cross to find them housing and food.

It was also announced that they would file civil and criminal complaints against Phan Imex.

Eighteen women and two children escaped from the social affairs centre on Wednesday after being held for a week without charge.

Uy Sam Ath, the director of disaster management of the Cambodian Red Cross said that the Red Cross has no plan to help evictees. He said that the Red Cross’ goal is only to help flood victims, the poor, orphans, elderly people and those with AIDS, etc…

The Phan Imex company evicted Borei Keila residents from their houses in Phnom Penh. They were sent to live about 30 km from the city.

Human rights organizations have expressed deep concerns about the new locations for Borei Keila residents because they are facing food shortage and they need immediate help from humanitarian organizations.

A Cambodian saying goes like this: “It’s better that your boat sinks in the middle of the river rather than having your house destroyed by fire.” How does this apply to Borei Keila residents?

The residents saw their houses smashed and bulldozed by the Phan Imex company and by the local cops. All that is left is empty lots, belonging of the residents were destroyed in a blink.

Sia Phearom, the director of the Housing Rights Task Force, said that residents from Borei Keila community are no different from house fire victims because they lost all their belongings after Phan Imex destroyed their houses in the middle of Phnom Penh city, houses that they used to live in peace.

Synopsis: On 07 Nov 2011, Bun Rany Hun Xen, the president of the Khmer Red Cross, asked the SRP and the HRP to urgently help flood victims. She warned them not to just criticize and accuse the government of distributing gifts for its political gain.

“The government did not prevent any opposition party, NGO, or human rights group from distributing aid to our people. If you have gifts to distribute, the government will be very happy. This means that our people are in dire need.”

SRP MP Nuth Romduol reacted to Bun Rany’s call by asking the Cambodian Red Cross to closely review and take measure against village and commune chiefs who practice discrimination: “The Cambodian Red Cross does not belong to any political party. The Red Cross belongs to all the Cambodian people in general, and [its distributions] are gifts from generous donors.

Cambodia, China Red Cross renew co-op deal

PHNOM PENH - The Cambodian Red Cross (CRC) and the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) on Tuesday renewed another five-year-cooperation agreement from 2011-2015, aimed at providing mutual help in humanitarian activities.

The agreement was signed between CRC's president Bun Rany, wife of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, and RCSC's visiting vice president Hao Linna.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Hao Linna said Cambodia and China Red Cross have made mutual cooperation since 2001 and the cooperation agreement has been renewed every five years.

Chinese Embassy donates 10,000 USD to Cambodian Red Cross

PHNOM PENH, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Embassy on Monday donated 10,000 U.S. dollars to Cambodian Red Cross to help its program to train young volunteers in the country.

The hand-over ceremony was held on Monday at the headquarters of Cambodian Red Cross (CRC) with the attending of He Leping, political counselor of Chinese Embassy, and Pum Chantinie, secretary general of the CRC.

Pum Chantinie said that in recent ten years, Chinese Embassy has always provided assistance to the CRC to support its relief and humanitarian activities. She, on behalf of the CRC, expressed sincere thanks to the Chinese Embassy.

He Leping expressed admiration for the success achieved by the CRC under the leadership of CRC's President Bun Rany Hun Sen.

The Cambodian Red Cross is the largest humanitarian organization in Cambodia. Today, the CRC delivers a plethora of programs including health care, and distributing information on the movement's fundamental principles and humanitarian values and disaster response and preparedness activities throughout Cambodia.

Cambodia donates $100,000 to China for quake relief

PHNOM PENH, May 15 (Xinhua) -- The Cambodian government on Thursday donated 100,000 U.S. dollars for the relief to the earthquake victims in China.

On behalf of the Cambodian government, Hor Namhong, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, handed over the donation to Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jinfeng, along with a letter of condolence from Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.

"I feel extremely saddened that your country has suffered the loss of thousands of lives, injuries and extensive damages due to the powerful earthquake in Sichuan province, central part of China," Hun Sen wrote in the letter dated May 14.

"On behalf of the Royal Government and people of Cambodia, may I convey to Your Excellency and the People of China, particularly the victims and members of the bereaved families my deepest sympathy and profound condolences for the tragic loss and great suffering brought about by this natural disaster," he wrote.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Cambodian Red Cross donated 10,000 U.S. dollars through the Chinese embassy in Phnom Penh to the Red Cross Society of China to facilitate its humanitarian activities for the earthquake-affected areas.

A 7.8-magnitude quake rocked Wenchuan county, 159 km northwest of the southwest Sichuan province's capital of Chengdu, at 14:28 (0628 GMT) on Monday, killing thousands of people in eight affected provinces.

Statue to commemorate Pol Pot’s victims [proposed by Youk Chhang to Bun Rany Hun Sen]

A giant statue, 20-meter high, would be built in downtown Phnom Penh to commemorate the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime. This initiative could become a true symbol of peace in the kingdom.

An art monument dedicated to Pol Pot’s victims, that was what Youk Chhang, the director of the Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam), proposed to Bun Rany Hun Sen, the Red Cross director, on the International Women’s Day.

“This statue would be built in Hun Sen park, in order to attract the attention of all the passers-by on what took place during that era,” Youk Chhang said in a letter he sent to Bun Rany Hun Sen. Holding a child’s hand, the statue would symbolize the memory of the genocide, and also the passing down of history to younger Cambodian generations.

The statue would consist of seven parts, representing the 7 million Cambodians living in the country when the KR came to power. Three of the 7 parts would be buried to remind the 3 million people who died or disappeared. “The face of the statue would face the west, and it would reflect artistic and human characteristics, while leaving aside revenge and grudges,” Youk Chhang said. “On 08 March of each year, this mother and child will bear a message of peace.”

There is no official reaction from Bun Rany’s Red Cross yet. Men Neary Sopheak, Bun Rany’s cabinet director, declined to comment because she did not see Youk Chhang’s letter yet.

At the ECCC, the reactions were positive. Reach Sambath, spokesman for ECCC, indicated that it was a “nice gift for the victims. We congratulate such initiatives.” Kek Galabru, Licadho human rights organization President, had the same reaction and she applauded Youk Chhang’s undertaking.

Cambodian Red Cross Calls For Tolerance For Workers With HIV/AIDS

PHNOM PENH, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- Cambodian Red Cross President Bun Rany has called for an end to discrimination against workers living with HIV/AIDS during her Wednesday visit to a garment factory in Phnom Penh, China's Xinhua news agency said quoting local newspaper reports Thursday.

The president, also the wife of Prime Minister Hun Sen, asked bosses not to reduce the salary of infected workers should they miss work for treatment and stressed to the Cambodian public that HIV can't be passed through social contact, reported Cambodian- language newspaper the Koh Santepheap.

Bun Rany said that her comments signify the start of her organisation's AIDS and the Private Sector initiative, which has been developed to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS at factories as most of the nation's estimated 300,000 garment workers are female and vulnerable to HIV infection.

Workers should avoid infection by always remaining faithful to one partner, she said, adding "we may forget AIDS, but AIDS never forgets us."

Factory management should be tolerant of the issue and administer medication to infected workers, Rany added.

The HIV/AIDS infection rate in Cambodia decreased from 3.3 percent in 1997 to 0.9 percent in 2006 due to effective cooperation between the government, local authorities, relevant institutions, and NGOs, according to official figures.

Cambodia celebrated World Red Cross Red Crescent Day Tuesday with Bun Rany, wife of Prime Minister Hun Sen and the president of the local society, in Battambang, distributing rice and inaugurating a storehouse.

The Cambodian Society has branches in 24 provinces across the country, with a goal to promote humanitarian ideals and protect human dignity, said Ouk Damry, vice president of the Cambodian Red Cross.

The Red Cross provides "impartial assistance to people in need," he said, "in order to reduce the impact of disasters and disease."

The Cambodian Red Cross also educates people to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS, avian influenza and other diseases, while promoting sanitation and clean water, Ouk Damry said.

The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has 185 member chapters and 100 million volunteers worldwide, according to a statement from the organization.

That cooperation was important to keep in mind as different countries around the world mark World Red Cross Day, the statement said.

"We know from long experience in dealing with crisis that no single government or organization alone can tackle the rising challenges posed by catastrophes, conflicts, health emergencies, poverty and migration," the statement said.
