Phnom Penh's tax revenue jumps sharply in first two months

The Phnom Penh Municipality has collected twice as much tax revenue in January and February as it did in the same two months of 2005, local media reported on Wednesday.
According to the figures released by the municipality in its annual report on Tuesday, Phnom Penh collected 1.6 million U.S. dollars in the first two months of this year, up from about 700,000 in the same period of last year.
Om Chan, municipal tax department director, contributed the increase for the enforcement of laws. "We collected taxes with transparency," he was quoted by The Cambodia Daily as saying.
He added that the largest increases came from collecting taxes on land sales, on unused land and from business licenses.
Overall, the municipality collected 7.8 million dollars in 2005, up from 7.1 million dollars in 2004, according to the report.
In nationwide, 28 million dollars in tax revenues was collected in the first two months of this year, the report said.
