Vacheara accuses Sam Rainsy of wanting to destroy the monarchy and removing royal family members from politics

Princess Norodom Vacheara, a senior official of the Funcinpec party, is not happy when Mr. Sam Rainsy, the leader of the opposition party mentioned that Funcinpec now consists of 2 factions. The third faction consists those who are not loyal with the monarchist Funcinpec party. The princess said that the issue raised by Mr. Sam Rainsy was done to destroy the monarchy and to remove the royal family from politics. The princess said that the choice for a royal family member to remain in politics depends only the support from the people.
Regarding this issue, Mr. You Hockry, Funcinpec’s second vice-president of the National Assembly provided a response on Friday. He said that it is not just because the leadership of Funcinpec is under the control of royal family members for the party to be recognized as a monarchist party. He recognized the fact that the president of the Funcinpec had always been a member of the royal family starting with King-Father up to prince Norodom Ranariddh currently. All Funcinpec party officials are still following the leadership of the party president [Prince Norodom Ranariddh]. However, the function of secretary-general of the party does not necessarily goes to a member of the royal family. As far as he knew, the first secretary-general of the party was Mr. Tea Chamrat, who was followed by Mr. Loy Sim Chheang, and more recently by Mr. Tol Lah, before the position was filled by Prince Norodom Sirivudh. Therefore, the fact that Mr. Nhiek Bun Chhay is the current secretary-general of the party does not affect the relationship between the leadership of the party and the monarchy.
On Thursday, Mr. Sam Rainsy said that a number of Funcinpec party members in the provinces wanted to joint his party (the SRP). Because of the splintering of the Funcinpec party, local Funcinpec party members no longer trust their leaders. Sam Rainsy said: “Within the Funcinpec party currently, there seems to be two factions. One faction consists of ordinary citizens like Mr. Nhiek Bun Chhay, Mr. You Hockry who are leading the party, and the other faction consisting of royal family members.” Mr. Sam Rainsy observes that the downfall of Funcinpec is difficult to talk about because what is happening is not a gain for this political party.
However, Mr. Nhiek Bun Chhay, the new Funcinpec secretary-general said: “there is no change in this party.” He declared that he doesn’t pay attention on the resignation from party, and he is contact with Prince Ranariddh who is currently abroad in order to “save the structure” of the party. Therefore, the name of the Funcinpec party should be given back to King-Father, its creator, and this party should choose a new name.”
