Prince Sisowath Thomico said Tuesday that he will leave the Royal Palace in two weeks because he is forming an as-yet-unnamed new political party, which will be launched sometime next month. "I’m in the middle of having work done on the new house I am going to live in," he said, adding that the house was in either Chbar Ampou commune I or II in Meanchey district. Retired King Norodom Sihanouk, who has put distance between himself and the planned party of his nephew, said in a statement on Monday that the party posed no conflict of interest for Prince Thomico, as his nephew was no longer his private secretary and would be leaving the palace. "It is ridiculous and shameful to attach such political importance to S Thomico, who is neither [French prime minister] D de Villepin, nor [French Socialist leader] Segolene Royal and still less Samdech Hun Sen," Norodom Sihanouk wrote. Prince Thomico, who has declined to comment on the former King's statements, also said that he had been discussing the formation of his new party "for several months" with his aunt Princess Norodom Vacheara, who is now in France. They both agreed that the party would stand for national independence, territorial integrity and economic development, he said.
