Sixty-four female garment workers were hospitalized following a mysterious mass fainting Thursday at a factory in Phnom Penh's Russei Keo district, police officials said. The incident started after five women passed out in a restroom at the Vivatino Design factory around 10 am, with the remaining 59 losing consciousness over the next two and a half hours, said district police chief Chey Soseila. Police believe that the fainting may have been linked to crowded conditions combined with fumes from chemically-treated clothing, he said, adding that no final determination had been made. A doctor at Preah Kossomak Hospital, which treated 29 of the workers, said the women were weak from a poor diet. Vivatino officials could not be contacted by phone on Friday and the factory did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment.
