The Apsara Authority, which manages the Angkor park, is appealing to the public to vote online in support of Angkor becoming one of the new seven wonders of the world. In a press release sent to the media Monday, the authority wrote, "For the sake of the supreme dignity of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the famed prestige of Khmer people's Angkor temples, Cambodian citizens inside and outside the country: Please vote and have relatives and foreign friends [vote]." A campaign to select the new seven wonders was launched in 2000 in order to replace the original seven wonders selected more than two millennia ago, according to the Web site www.new7wonders.com. The list of 21 finalists also includes the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, the Sydney Opera House in Australia and the Statue of liberty in New York. Voting by phone was set up last January and by Internet in March, and some countries have also put in phone messaging voting. The seven winning wonders will be announced in July.

The voting procedure is biased against poor nations.
