Hun Sen Lashes Back at Human Rights Critics

Prime Minister Hun Sen lashed out at unnamed critics of the government's human rights record Tuesday, arguing that the government has been promoting rights by providing people with what they need to survive.
Hun Sen's comments come in the wake of Sunday's International Human Rights Day when NGOs, along with US Ambassador Joseph Mussomeli, criticized the government over corruption, freedom of expression, protection of human rights workers and pre-election violence.
"We cannot demand human rights from the angels or from the sky—human rights start with survival rights," Hun Sen said.
"Schools, irrigation systems, hospitals and pagodas are all human rights and what the people need," he said in speech in Svay Rieng province, which was broadcast on Apsara radio.
"If we do good things, they admire only one thing, but if we do one bad thing they talk bad about us 10 times," he said.
Hun Sen added that human rights is a moot issue if people don’t have food to eat. He also accused critics of forgetting that Cambodia would not be able to address such issues if it was not for the earlier incarnation of his government that toppled the Khmer Rouge.
"Without the liberation of January 7, [1979], people would not have survived — including the retired King and the Queen," he said.
"We could not demand rights from the Khmer Rouge."
Kek Galabru, president of local rights group Licadho, said the prime minister's reaction to criticism was normal. But she said criticism was necessary for the country to improve.
"[Hun Sen] is disappointed with our criticism, but criticism is positive and not negative," she said.
Prince Sisowath Thomico, head of the Jatiniyum Front Party, said that human rights violations, such as intimidation and pressure on political activists, is still an issue.
Prince Thomico added that improvements in respect for human rights in Cambodia were not ushered in by the 1979 toppling of the Khmer Rouge, as claimed by Hun Sen, but the creation of a Cambodian Constitution in 1993.

That sucks. Without K-5 1983 600,000 Khmer would'nt die either. Hun Sen was a killer in KR who always thank Ah Youn for taking our land anyway.
Hun Sen said Human Rights are school,hospital, pagoda, those are what people need. I think that those are things that Hun Sen and his family and his corruption party need too. Why did his family and governor officials need to be Millionair and commited corruption by stealing, robbing, intimidating, Killing people?
Hun Sen and his government are always praising January 7. He should be ashamed by saying like an idiot and stuborn. January 7 is very degrading our nation and put Hun Sen in a deep political trouble. January 7 until 1993 was the period which Cambodia land took controling by Yoeurn Hanoi.
The Cambodia Kingdom, now,is an the Heritage of Cambodian resistant force were alongside the border of Cambodia and Thailand. The Cambodia Kingdom is belonge to the Khmer Liberation Front of patriotic Son San(General Son San) and the King Father's soldiers who sacrified lives for the Country to push Vietnamese soldiers out of Cambodia. And also an effort from United Nation to fight the Communist Vietnam which invaded Cambodia in January 7 1979 off Cambodia.
The 1991 1992 1993 and The Khmer resistant are the one were forming the Kingdom of Cambodia today. If there were no those days and those patriots, Hun Sen would have been food dog for Vietnamese.

The CPP controls all the mainstream media, therefore, Hun Sen's remarks are considered as the official history of Cambodia. Cambodian people cannot challenge his remarks, because there are no public forums for them to talk back to him or to question him directly. They are only allowed to listen to his lies and deceits on radio stations and TV channels.
He said: "If we do good things, they admire only one thing, but if we do one bad thing they talk bad about us 10 times". In fact, he meant to say: "for every one good thing that we do, there are 10 bad things that we also do".
He is doing exactly what he accused others of doing. The permitted human rights event attended by local and international participants could only reach a small proportion of Cambodia's population, but his crude remarks are aired on all public and private TV channels and radio stations. In his opinion, the human rights issue is a bad thing.

A government that can not handle criticsm is a government that can not truely lead.
President Clinton was not only criticized, but was on the verge of impeachment, not for his ability to lead, but for his personal affair. He is recognized by people around the world as probably one of the greatest U.S. president of all time. He has handle criticsm very well. The current U.S. pres doesn't handle criticism well, but he has no choice.
The Prime Minister can not handle criticsm like real leaders in a democracy. He should, ofcourse, defend his record, but he should also accept that criticsm is a "HEALTHY" part of "DEMOCRACY".
