Union Workers, Politicians Remember Chea Vichea

About 100 unionists and SRP politicians marched Monday from the Free Trade Union headquarters in Daun Penh district to the newsstand at Wat Langka where Cambodia's top unionist, Chea Vichea, was gunned down Jan 22, 2004 The procession of mourners, carrying wreaths of flowers and photographs of Chea Vichea, began marching at 8 am. "The government is incapable of finding the murderers," said Chea Mony, current FTU president. "I also accuse the government of being involved in my brother's killing," he added. SRP lawmaker Son Chhay said the government’s failure to arrest the killers was suspicious. "The ignorance of the government [in not finding the killers] makes us suspect the government," he said. In October, the Appeals Court railed to hold the appeal hearing of Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun, who are convicted of the killing. Ly Vouch Leng, president of the Appeals Court, said it was up to the judges to set a date for their appeal. The SRP called for the immediate release of Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun, and a "truly independent" investigation into the murder.
