Phnom Penh (dpa) - Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet arrived to begin an official visit to Cambodia at the invitation of King Norodom Sihamoni Tuesday.

Triet became the first Vietnamese leader since at least 1993 to have his official welcome staged inside the Cambodian royal palace, where he was greeted by King Sihamoni.

Triet will meet with Prime Minister Hun Sen, Senate leader Chea Sim and National Assembly chief Heng Samrin as well as Vietnamese business leaders in the community and attending a business forum.

He will also visit the Angkor Wat temple complex in the northern province of Siem Reap before his scheduled return to Hanoi on March 1, according to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement.

The visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, according to the ministry. Trade between the two neighbours grew by 30 per cent last year and the two governments have strong historical ties. Both are now members of the World Trade Organization.
