Opposition leader Sam Rainsy called on Cambodia's smaller, fragmented parties to gather under one banner for the 2008 National Election and face the ruling Cambodian People's Party, after his party increased its number of commune chiefs Sunday.
"Now, [the Sam Rainsy Party] is appealing for one democratic movement to compete one on one with the CPP," Sam Rainsy told reporters outside the National Assembly in Phnom Penh. "If competing one on one, I believe the CPP will not win."
The Sam Rainsy Party is the sole opposition party with seats in the National Assembly and won a handful of chief seats in Sunday's commune elections.
The ruling Cambodian People's Party maintains a tight grip on power, however, and holds a coalition partnership with Funcinpec in national politics.
Funcinpec, the royalist party, suffered a resounding defeat in this week's election, having split with its former leader, Prince Norodom Ranariddh, who began his own party last year amid corruption and infidelity scandals.
"In 1998 [and] 2003 the democrats were divided, with Funcinpec and Sam Rainsy parties," Sam Rainsy said. "Now Funcinpec is dissolved."
He said he envisioned his party leading a coalition of smaller parties. Twelve parties in total put up candidates in Sunday's commune elections.
Sam Rainsy's rally cry came after a speech by Prime Minister Hun Sen earlier this week calling for unity after the elections. In that speech, Hun Sen said that not even all the parties combined would be able to compete with the CPP in national elections.
Norodom Ranariddh Party spokesman Muth Chantha said the party welcomed Sam Rainsy's appeal, "to serve the nation's interest for a victory in the 2008 election."

You must know that about half of the vote are made by YUONS and most of Cambodians are prevented from voting.

This is a warning kem Sokha - don't be flattered by your bit of popularity. Yopu'd have no chance. Go join other main opposition party as one force. When Hunxen is out, you can break up and go your own way. Don't take a few points of philosophical differences as the priority.
The CPP is too strong from money to yuon backing, not to mention they will never hesitate to use violence if they feel threatened. Tat is how they manage to stay in power so far. Remember in 1993 when they lost ? They wanted to divde the country and go to war again. In 1998, as the counting kep showing the opposition were leading, Hunxen told NEC to stop counting; a few months later they said they had won. Ever since, Hunxen never missed making a veiled threat that if the CPP some sort of catastrophe would come to Khmer people. He means it, no joke. This former poor mat seller would never accept fair play and peace until a bullet pierce through his head.

I am strongly support to what Exellecy sam rainsy has appealed. But just to remind and be careful with Norodom Rannariddh. He had always made all khmer disappointed. Actually he's not strong, but very smart when seeing advantage come near. We are very happy to see all democrates to unite together. Unity" seems to be far away for all those who considered themselves as nationalists or Democrats(SRP/FUN/NRP/THOMICO etc..), because some leaders of those are not mentally/spiritually strong enough which can be easily to be divided by someone[Diviser pour gouverner..)as we had a lot of experiences since 1990s...
Type of guy such as Ranaridth will find in advance his own interests after nation's (Dollars/some Temporary partial power/Srey, Sra.. } they are so easy to be spoiled with those things...Good tactics of their competitors(CPP) to defeat them.. it is dificult to say that their competitor use evil means, normally this tactics/strategy are to be applied worldwide especially in developing countries.....
