April 12, 2007

The Phnom Penh municipality, capital of Cambodia, is to deploy police throughout the city in a bid to provide safety and security to celebrators of the Khmer New Year on April 14, local media reported on Thursday.

Police in 76 administrative police posts throughout the city will be deployed ubiquitously, especially at traditional gathering spots such as pagodas, to ensure security and safety as well as fun for revelers, Cambodian newspaper the Rasmei Kampuchea quoted Phnom Penh police chief Touch Naroth as saying.

Municipal Governor Kep Chuktema ordered all police and local authorities to crackdown on certain groups that gather at night, consume alcohol and fire off gunshots, instilling fear in the city 's residents, the newspaper said.

The perpetrators be brought to justice and no excuses would be tolerated, he said, adding that the capital must have good security and safety and city dwellers must be kept from fear for now, until after the Khmer New Year and forever.

Kep Chuktema also told police forces to close all the gambling dens as they are the source of robbery and theft.
