3 Cambodians arrested for allegedly forming illegal armed force
Three men have been arrested in Pursat province in connection with the alleged formation of an illegal armed force to topple the Cambodian government, local media reported on Thursday.
The authorities arrested Ny Kosal, Tol Man and Chan Daraveasna, on Tuesday evening with evidence that they had recruited people to form an unlawful armed movement, Cambodian-language daily the Kampuchea Thmey quoted provincial police chief Hen Vuthea as saying.
The confiscated documents included paperwork to recruit lieutenant colonels, regional military commanders and deputies, with Ny Kosal as major, but no weapons were seized from the men, it reported.
"According to the documents, we can preliminarily conclude that they intended to recruit an unlawful army in Cambodia to overthrow the current government," said Hen Vuthea.
Ny Kosal admitted that he obtained the documents from Tol Man, who stressed he got them from Chan Daraveasna, said the police chief, adding that Chan Daraveasna confessed he was given the materials by a person in Phnom Penh.
A provincial police official who requested anonymity said the three men must be backed by a ringleader, whom police should be able to identify soon, the paper said.
The three men will be sent to the provincial court on Thursday for questioning, it added.
