In order to compete with the CPP and win during the upcoming 2008 general election, opposition leader Sam Rainsy called on all the nationalist democratic and royalist forces to unite in a democratic movement. Will this SRP wish meet with success and lead to the formation of a democratic party united with the royalist group or not? The following is an interview between RFA’s Mao Sotheany and Mu Sochua, SRP Secretary-General.
Mao Sotheany (RFA): In the last few days, as you already know, political parties in Cambodia hold a plan, in particular, Prince Thomico wants to unite the royalist parties. I want to know what is the SRP position? As the party Secretary-General, what do you think, what is your position on the idea of uniting into a single party?
Mu Sochua (MS): For the SRP, unity is a gain for our people, as well as for our nation. When democratic parties are united, it will represent a gain for the democrats. What kind of gain? We will uphold our opinion, we will seek the 2008 victory for the interest of the nation, in order to resolve the poverty issue, to eliminate corruption, land disputes, etc…
RFA: Based on what I know, Prince Thomico only talked about the unity of the royalist parties, I did not see him talking about uniting with the democrats at all. On this point, I would like you to clarify whether the royalist and the democrats can unite together? What are the differences [between the 2 groups]?
MS: We can see that, besides the CPP, all other parties are separate parties for now. If we can unite altogether, starting with the royalists who now have 3 political parties, into a single party … then we can defend everything that I have mentioned earlier, namely, the national interest, [and resolve] the poverty issue, land disputes, border disputes, illegal immigration, etc… Then we will be certain to move to the 2008 victory for the democrats.
RFA: In this regard, do you believe that the uniting of royalist and democratic parties can be done? What will be the goal of this [united] party, can they unite with each other, what will happen?
MS: I believe that the SRP proposal to unite all the democrats [is indeed leading to] all these democrats to forge ahead toward a unification. I truly believe that the wish of the SRP, as well as that of all Cambodian democratic parties, will progress towards our true goal, that is to be [united] under the same roof [same political banner] with all true democrats, in order to resolve the national issues which I mention earlier, and in addition to those, we will also resolve the issue of violence, the suffering of our people due to land-grabbing … the suffering of the workers, the resolution of border issues, of poverty, of true development for our people, so that we all gain together and not just a gain by a handful of people [as it is right now], and most of all, finding justice for the people.
RFA: I want you to clarify about the royalist party, that is the party which supports royalism and which is pro-royalism, under this designation, what can you tell us about this type of party?
MS: I used to be a Funcinpec party follower when it was led by Prince Ranariddh, at that time, for me, a royalist party is a party which follows the political goals of the father of the national unity, that is: defending the territorial integrity, defending the value of the country and the nation led by the king.
Nevertheless, at the same time, we cannot just simply talk about goals, we have to show to the people that when they are suffering, when they don’t have land, as MP from a royalist party, when our constituents are facing hardship, we must visit them on the spot. We cannot just use the confidence the royalists placed in us with their votes to sit inside the National Assembly without daring to speak out, and to only raise our hand to vote [at the National Assembly] along with the CPP.
I truly believe that when talking about royalism, if any political party which claims to be royalist, but ended voting for the CPP, people will understand who are true royalist and who are fake royalist. I truly believe that the people understand about this issue.
The people love the king. In our country, the constitution stipulates that the country name is Kingdom of Cambodia, this means that it is led by the king, and that the king is a symbolic leader of the nation, of the value of our nation, of our culture.
But when one is royalist, and one is a leader of the political party, one must set aside the royal family name.
When we use true democracy to lead, how should one lead? It’s not just a prince (or princess) who can become a party president, or senior party leaders, we should gauge based on talent, quality, and knowledge of a party member, and we must count on the votes by party members to decided whether a prince or a commoner have the ability to lead the country, the political party, this is what democracy mean.

No ranting and raving here...
To Ms. Mu Sochua,
Ms. Mu Sochua is very good at talking. Just talking like her boss, Mr. Sam Rainsy. "Qui se ressemblent, s'assemblent".
But both, the president and the secretary-general, when they call for a "democratic movement", they simply want smaller parties to join the SRP, work blind-foldedly under strict instructions from Mr. Sam Rainsy and his wife Mrs. Tioulong Saumura with no buts and no ifs, empty their wallets for the SRP, do their utmost to propel this party to victory and then GO HOME.
TO US, THIS IS CALLED "BIG DICK DEMOCRACY"!!!
hehe!
