American jailed in Cambodia for sexual abuse

Tue Jun 5, 2007

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - A Cambodian court has sentenced an American tourist to 13 years in prison for sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl, the trial judge said on Tuesday.

Boris Myron Ma, 46, was found guilty and ordered to pay $750 in compensation to the girl's family, judge Chan Madina said after a trial in Phnom Penh on Monday which was closed to protect the girl.

"The court had enough grounds to sentence him to 13 years in jail," she said without elaborating.

Ma's lawyer said he would appeal.

"The girl did not say my client abused her, so how come the court sentenced him," Theng Meng Y said without giving further details of Ma, one of 1.7 million tourists who visited Cambodia last year.

"My client is stressed upon hearing the verdict. He is now being treated in hospital."

The court also sentenced an ethnic Vietnamese woman, accused of supplying the girl to Ma, to 13 years in jail, the judge said.
