Keo Remy declares his resignation from the SRP, will join Kem Sokha

Translated from Khmer by Socheata

Taking advantage of the National Assembly (NA) plenary session held on Monday, Keo Remy, SRP MP from Phnom Penh, publicly declared his resignation from his MP position starting immediately, and that he will now join Kem Sokha’s HRP instead.

Keo Remy’s resignation from the SRP caught the attention of civil society and the general public. However, SRP said that Keo Remy’s departure is his political right and that it does not affect the SRP.

Keo Remy made his declaration during the plenary session of the NA on Monday morning, and he then grabbed his briefcase and walked out from the NA. In his declaration, Keo Remy said: “Because of my past decision, I made a public declaration indicating that I will abandon politics. However, based on the requests made by civil society, the people, and various workers, who sent their letters to me, asking me to continue (with politics), therefore, I can say that this is my last day (at the NA), and I am bidding farewell to your excellencies, Lok Chumteav, and I have decided that I am going to continue politics, but this time, I will join with H.E. Kem Sokha to form the Human Rights Party. Therefore, I ask that all people who supported me to please continue to provide your support to me but through the HRP.” After making this declaration, Keo Remy left the NA floor without providing further comments as to why he is leaving the SRP.

Yim Sovann, a former SRP MP from Phnom Penh, and current deputy Secretary-general of the party, believes that it is normal for Keo Remy to make this decision, and that this is the political right of each individual. He added that SRP will not prevent the departure from the party by anyone. This SRP course of action is aimed at proving that the party is truly a democratic one. Nevertheless, Yim Sovann said that he regrets to see a SRP colleague leaving the party now, but he said that this is the personal decision of every individual to choose his political path.

Keo Remy was a former Funcinpec MP during the second legislative mandate, and he left Funcinpec to join SRP just before the 2003 election. At his departure from Funcinpec, Keo Remy did not hold any press conference to attack Funcinpec or Prince Ranariddh, then-Funcinpec president. This time again, a source indicated that Keo Remy has some issue with the SRP, but he is not going to attack or reveal SRP’s internal issue, he only made the declaration about his resignation only. When Keo Remy was reached, he declined to provide further comment.

A source from the SRP claimed that Keo Remy is not the only one who will depart from SRP, there are also a number of other SRP MPs and members of the party steering committee who plan to leave. This source claims that Kieng Vang, the current Kampot MP and a former high-ranking Funcinpec MP, is also planning to leave. Kieng Vang could not be contacted yet to obtain his clarification, but some people believe that this information may be true. In addition to Kieng Vang, some report also indicated that Lon Phon, a former SRP MP from Battambang and current SRP Svay Rieng province working group chairman, also threatens to walk out if his name does not appear on the top of the list of MP candidates for the 2008 general election.

SRP usually falls victim to this type of political maneuver right before each election, especially during the listing to MP candidates when some people believe that they have worked for a long time already, but their names do not appear on the top of the candidate list, whereas the names of rich newcomers feature on the top of the candidate list instead.

A pilician who walk out from one party and join another several times that is his right. But it is absolutely show that he is secking his own benefit and high rank position.

I dare guess, the new party of Kem Sokha will get not more than 5 seats or could be zero seat in the national election 2008.

What he is being done, just to break down the democrates only. This way is to help the CPP to get win the elcetion easily.

This is only the tip of the iceburg.
There are lots of internal problems in the SRP that need to be resolved. The arrogant nature of Sam Rainsy, his wife and other mindless "yes sir" people supposedly in the "leadership" will further deteriot its ability to reform. NDI, IRI, FNFs and other international organizations trying to help SRP were complaining of the one man show of SRP all the time. The problem is SRP situated itself very well in the past as the only "choice" for the so-called "democrats".

It is sad to see again that on the one hand claiming to "unite all democrats" and on the other accusing HRP people of being bought by Hun Sen in breaking up the "voice of the democrats".

If SRP is serious about winning, they would initiate meetings with HRP people instead using all the strategy to destroy all others. I truly doubt if SRP can accept criticism itself.

HRP is now challenging the SRP to show itself as democrats. So far the only things SRP can do is playing dirty politic and negative personal attack while its party structure or platform did not reflect what it claimed.

My guess is we will see lots more of the problems inside the SRP will come to light.

My message to SRP is reform!!! HRP is certainly helping putting the pressure. Using outlet like KI, Maneaseka and FM 93.5 to attack others will back fire.

To the SRP leadership,

The ignorant but talkative Keo Remy has gone to join another ignorant and talkative politician, Mr. Kem Sokha, President of the Human Rights Party. Taking account of Remy’s previous defection from FUNCINPEC, this defection is predictable and surprises nobody. Keo Remy is not such a guy who has principle or confidence in himself. The only thing he has is greed. Greed is so powerful. It can make people unreasonable, insatiable, uncontrollable and blind, and Keo Remy is no exception.

However, Keo Remy’s departure has left behind another interpretation of the event. He may have had some problem with the SRP leadership and his problem has been swept under the carpet just like those of the SEVEN MPs who fled to the FUNCINPEC a couple of months before the 2003 election campaign started. If that is the case, there will inevitably be more defections. Why? It is simply because of Mr. Sam Rainsy’s attitude. He is irresponsible, uncaring, arrogant, stubborn and unwilling to listen to anybody except his wife. In brief, he is a potential despot.

Folks, have you ever heard of any dictator having the intention of solving any internal or external problem at all? Lenin? Stalin? Mao Tse Tung? Kim Il Sung? Kim Jong Il? Fidel Castro? Suharto? Ayatolah Homeni? Pol Pot? Saddam Hussein? Hun Sen? Norodom Ranariddh? Kem Sokha? Sam Rainsy? No way. Sweeping problems under the carpet is the most striking characteristic of a tyrant. When a tyrant has not yet grabbed the power firmly into his/her hands, he/she will simply ignore those problems. When a tyrant is on the top with full authority and control, he/she will literally crush those problems and all their sources. Think about it, folks!

Could it be that Hun Sen pay Kem Sokha to form a party so that SRP will get less supporters when some of them may go with Sokha? Like dividing up SRP's votes??

To Lok Kim Sokha,
Could you please tell us which condition you can coalition with SRP? I love khmer and full concern on Cambodia's future.

I regard you as democrat like Lok Sam Rainsy. You both are much influent on cambodian. You both had helped khmer effectively. You both can strike the Cambodia Authorithy on any problem rather than other representative of Assembly who represent the voice of khmer from any province.

Hmmm Nobody can get CPP off the seat beside Lok Kim Sokha and Lok Sam Rainsy come together who represent the majority of voice of khmer.

If you both parties still argue each other, it is less profit to poor cambodian who starve to live.

Think it, think about the election's rule. How many votes had no representative in the past election?

------------------
To the critician, don't open your smelly mouth to criticize other easily. Don't use democracy to criticize anyone you like, think about cambodian profit. The bullsh*t are not Lok Kim Sokha and lok Sam Rainsy, that is you bullsh*t. You are fake democrat, you just want them fight then CPP get the majority of votes. Ah d*mmy.

All khmer please think about own profit, what we want it real for cambodian. Who push them, lok Kim Sokha and lok Sam Rainsy into strike publicily, they are the enermy of khmer, because they don't want khmer coalition, prosperity.

They are laugh out loud when they see democrats fight to each other. Ah f*ke democrat.

To 9:17PM,

In the field of politics, you are actually a toddler: 1 step forward with 2 steps backward, another step sideway and you fall down. In an open society, people are free to express their opinion and belief, people are free to speak up, people are free to raise issues, people are free to voice their concern and people are free to criticize and scrutinize.

Keo Remy was an SRP MP. So he is a public figure like Sam Rainsy, Tioulong Saumura, Kong Koam, Yim Sovan, Chea Sim, Chea Soth, Heng Samrin, Hun Sen, Sar Kheng, Sok An, Nhek Bun Chhay, Ung Huot, Thoam Bun Srun, Kith Meng, Kem Sokha, etc... Public figures are dealing with national interests. Therefore, they are held accountable for everything they do to tarnish national identity and pride, to stifle national development and progress, and to endanger Cambodia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

I've been visiting KI Meidia blog every single day. I hardly notice any comment concentrating on private lives of public figures. Cambodia's liberal democracy has gradually matured. If, for some reason, you can't cope with it, just drop dead, don't be a pain in the ass for a smooth flow of good ideas and don't take pride in showing your broken Englis to the world. YOU'VE GOT THAT?
