Taiwanese man gets 20 years in jail for heroin

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Court on August 14 handed down a 20 year imprisonment sentence to Chen Yi Yen, a Taiwanese national, for trafficking heroin.

Chen, 27, was also ordered to pay a fine of 50 million VND (3,125 USD).

According to the verdict, Chen was hired by a Taiwanese couple, that are related to him to transport heroin from Cambodia to Taiwan.

On December 30, 2006, they flew to Cambodia to buy heroin and boarded on bus to Ho Chi Minh City before flying back to Taiwan.

However, at the international Tan Son Nhat airport, Chen was caught red-handed while trying to conceal 340g of heroin in his underwear.

In Vietnam, possessing, trading or trafficking 600 grams or upwards of heroin is punishable by death.
