For a fistful of Yuans: We respect the sovereignty of our "friends" ... even though we used to call them "evil" in the past

Cambodia's ruling party reiterates support for one-China policy

The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) on Wednesday in Phnom Penh issued a statement to reiterate its adherence to the one-China policy and said no to the Taiwan authority's efforts to re-open its representative office in Cambodia.

"For the last many years, we have noticed that there were many efforts by Taiwan to re-open its representative office in Cambodia. All these efforts didn't effect, because the Royal Government of Cambodia, which is led by Prime Minister Hun Sen, has always strictly respected the one-China policy and CPP also adheres to the same stance," said the statement.

CPP's stance is based on the principle of sovereignty, said the statement, adding that "we respect the sovereignty of our friends, our friends will also respect our sovereignty. The respect of our friends' sovereignty is as precious as the respect of our own sovereignty."

The principle of one-China policy can't be discussed, bargained and exchanged and it is the principle that we can't walk back from, it said.

"CPP would like to reiterate the stance that we accept the one-China policy only. We only recognize the People's Republic of China, which has official diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Cambodia and wide-ranging relations in other sectors," it said.

While CPP is still in power, Cambodia will strictly respect the one-China policy and will not allow any presence of representative office of Taiwan in Cambodia, it said.

"We can only accept the presence of Taiwanese business people and investors in their private capacities," it added.

Only intellectual handicape politician who cannot work out between China and Taiwan. Taiwan is a Province of China. at present 99% of all countries around world have treated Taiwan that way and will not allow Taiwan to set up their mission in their country except in a small name of Economic and Cultural office with a director in charge. At present, even President Bush has also banned President Chen Suibian to land his plane in the USA even for filling up petrol. Therefore, no country in the world will dare to confront with China foreign policy. All Cambodian politicians of all parties need to learn this world politic very well before making any decision which will harm Cambodia for a second time.
Sihanouk has closed relationship with Mao Ste Tung. That was may be a bit too earlier( not smart ). Now, if anyone dare to write off China as nothing ( not smart either), then it will be too bad. Areak Prey

Cambodia has been doing the kowtow to its neighbours for the past few hundred years of its history.

At least, doing the kowtow to the richer powers (China, U.S.) we'll get some scraps and pieces to eat. Doing the kowtow to the poorer powers (Thai, Laos and Viet), we not only get kicked but also our foods are taken from us by these poor bullies.

Our glory and empire of the past can only earn us hard currencies from tourism now. We need to find our national pride of the present days elsewhere by understanding the world's politics better.

Since China respect Cambodian sovereignty and I believe not in a far distance future China will help Cambodia in their struggle to reclaim Khmer Kampuchea Krom!

I remembered King Sihanouk was accompanying the Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai in the 1950 to verify Cambodian maritime boundary against the Viet aggression!

This is not a myth!

Of course, this is not a myth, but Zhou Enlai died many years ago and China has never made any promise to protect Cambodian sovereignty from the aggression of our neighbours.

China did try to protect their ideological satellite, when the Viet troops invaded and toppled the KR, by attacking Vietnam from the North. The Viets, with the Soviet assistance, anticipated the Chinese action, so they laid the traps resulting in thousands of death on both sides. China finally retreated and was humiliated.

Realistically, Cambodia is on its own if it wants to reclaim Kampuchea Krom and any offshore islands taken by the Viets. China just wants to be friend with Vietnam now. Time has changed, and we must seriously think about other options. Perhaps, we could learn from Israel and Singapore, and protect whatever we have left.
