Khieu Samphan Looking to 'Clear Himself' Ahead of Potential Trial, Groups Say

Heng Reaksmey, VOA Khmer
Original report from Phnom Penh
17 October 2007

Former head of state for the Khmer Rogue Khieu Samphan likely granted a long interview last week in order to clear his name publicly ahead of a potential trial, rights workers said Tuesday.

The reclusive Khieu Samphan spoke at length to VOA Khmer in a rare interview Oct. 11, another indicator that he sees himself as a likely candidate for indictment, they said.

He has already hired a firebrand French attorney, Jacques Verges, who defended in court Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, aka Carlos the Jackal, an infamous leftists terrorist.

Center for Social Development Executive Director Seng Theary said Khieu Samphan likely spoke to mask his faults as head of state for the Khmer Rouge.

"I think it is his strategy. His character is that [of the one] who wants to clear himself of the crimes that occurred in the Khmer Rouge regime," she said. "So he wants to interpret [his acts] for the people."

The aging Khmer Rouge leader was seeking sympathy from Cambodians and journalists ahead of a likely arrest by the Khmer Rouge tribunal, rights workers said.

"He wants to defend himself beforehand," said Hisham Mousar, a legal expert for the rights group Adhoc. "His defense is for people to hear about it beforehand. In his strategy, defending himself beforehand is better than the day that will arrive when he will be temporarily detained" by the tribunal courts.

We shouldn't listen all lies from this animal Khiev Samphann.
His regime was a lied regime. They have lied all the time. He used all logic points to clear his name but remember all khmer rouge leaders of all level have listen to their leaders. They cannot make their own rules and their own decision. All killings were ordered from the top to kill all Cambodian educate people and to create Cambodia a society like North Korea. A slavery Nation to serve all of his ledaership. Areak Prey

Weird, I see him more innocent then guilty by what his doing, not by what he said. What he said is self incriminating and open a door for the prosecutor to get a hook on him. What his doing, however, maybe he don't trust the ECCC. This is a bit like Sam Rainsy et Al or other who was driven into exile. On their return, they alway called all sorts of media to get involved so that they don't risk coming down the plane alone and get sniped; I guess.

Clarification: what I meant by "what his doing" is "talking to the media".

well, he wants to inform to the medias as well as Khmer around globe that's killing fields was'nt acted alone, must be someone else hiding here and there. especially in Hun Sen Government. that his point.

Bullshit, no one in the administration was as high ranked as Khieu Samphan; thus, they can't effected any of Pol Pot's policy.

To all Cambodians,

We should understand that The Khmer Rouge was composed of 4 main elements: the Pro-Vietnamese K-Rouge; the Pro-chinese K-Rouge; the moderate K-Rouge; the Pro-Sihanouk K-Rouge (the Sihanoukist).

To know clearly who REALLY massacred Khmers, we have to analize the 4 elements of Khmer Rouge. And this is a very simple thing to do.

Let me know what you have analized.

10:29, no court would convict Hun Sen et Al. from the fact that they went to Vietnam to protect themselves from the KR regime, shows that they are powerless people.

I am very surprised that - after losing millions of people - Cambodia still have too many ignorants who are fooled by the mass murderer who ran the country for 3 and 1/2 and does not know that millions of his people were dead If he had run for another year, the whole country would be emptied.
