First Tribunal Hearing 'Ice Water Splashed on the Face' of Critics, Gov't Says

The first public hearing of a Khmer Rouge leader, held this week, should silence critics of the government's efforts for a tribunal, a spokesman said Friday.

The hearing, on whether prison chief Duch should be released ahead of atrocity trials, brought hundreds of journalists and observers and was carried on television.

"This is like ice water being splashed on the face of those cursing the government [efforts] so far," spokesman Khieu Kanharith said.

But tribunal observers have warned that the hearing was only one step on a long road fraught with pitfalls.

"What has been achieved so far is just a step forward. It is a long journey to complete," opposition leader Sam Rainsy said.

"The tribunal is gradually working its ways to its independence," said Youk Chhang, director of the Documentation Center of Cambodia. "This is what we are going to stick to in order to achieve justice."

No, no, not "Ice water", but "Vietnamese's fish sauce."

If I were AH Khieu Kanharith I wouldn't be talking so soon because AH HUN SEN government needs to make more arrest!

By the way, why is it only Khmer people on trial? Do AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave government and the UN court want to dehumanize Cambodian people or what? There are those foreigners who are involved in killing thousand and thousand of Cambodian people too and I like to see them on trial too!

Actually, we love to drag Ah Khmer-Yuon criminals as well, but it's getting too expensive for the trial, but we'll let the Vietcong handle it instead. Either way, Ah Khmer-Yuon criminals will answered for their crime against humanity.

The Vietcong control everything and why do you have to embarrass yourself by blaming the Khmer Krom people?

You will know the real number of illegal Vietcong population in Cambodia after the 2008 election and why does AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave want to disclose after the election 2008 because it could cost him an election! The current conservative estimate of the illegal Vietcong in Cambodia to be 4 million! How could Cambodia economy grow if these illegal Vietcong steal most of the natural resources and land to from dirt poor Cambodian people?

The Khmer Rouge trial set up by the UN and AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave government is to create distraction from more serious issues!

The large influx of the Vietcong population is displacing Cambodian population at such alarming rate and nobody is taking notice! The Vietcong are having the upper hand thank to AH HUN SEN Vietcong corruption!

Khiev Kannaridh, for the political understanding, everybody knows that through the trial of Khmer Rouge, CPP has got huge benefits, and the important thing is it is just a path leading to the trap of Vietnam's strategic plan.

Khiev Kannaridh considers this few reasons:

1. Through KR trial, CPP gets benefits as the savior in January 7, 1979.

2. Through KR trial, CPP gets more votes from Cambodian people because CPP is standing with innocent people against brutality, though CPP themselves has committed brutality several times (bombing in on the crowd and coup detat..etc).

3. Through KR trial, CPP can lie Cambodian people and international stage as Cambodia has progressive in respecting rule of law. But in reality, CPP is still controlling mass media, freedom of demonstration and expression, culture of impunity is alive, and corruption is rampant. Especially, in case of of Tim Sakhorn, it shows that Cambodian citizenship is no clear management in the eye of Vietnam government....what is you guy doing with your boss Vietnam about Cambodian legal citizenship nowadays?

4. Justice from KR trial will not be prevailed because it is CPP politically oriented at the beginning to the end.

So, Khiev Kannaridh, your theory of throwing ice into face is absolutely twisting and sarcasm, you should change to say thanks for those who help accelerating KR trial and give opportunity to CPP for win-win political strategy.

Wrong, it is Ah Khmer-Yuon criminals who dragged the tribunal backward with their false rumors and propaganda in an attempt to stop it. The government is hardly involved with the trial at all, even when the ECCC violated some of our laws. All they are doing is supporting the ECCC to help keep it moving as quickly as it can be.
