Sam Rainsy rejects former party members’ accusations [-Khieu Kanharith: Defectors will be paid $750 in monthly salary]

On Monday, opposition leader Sam Rainsy called former party members who defected to the CPP as opportunists during the upcoming general election, and he also rejected their accusations of his dictatorial leadership and his instigation of injustice.

During a talk at his arrival from France, Sam Rainsy said that the defection of some of the former party officials will not influence his party because it has a strong structure.

He also said that tens of thousands grass root party supporters, those who hate corruption, those victims of land dispute, and those who are poor due to social problem, are currently supporting him.

Sam Rainsy said: “They are looking for excuses to mask the benefits they want to reap, but this is not important, this is a good timing for the SRP to provide the opportunity and the occasion to new party members to become responsible within the SRP party rank.”

A few days earlier, famous SRP MPs and high ranking party officials, such as Sok Pheng, Ngo Sovann, Ahmad Yahya, and Chhit Sarith resigned from their positions to defect to the CPP, these officials also declared that they took along with them to the CPP a large number of grass root party supporters and district party officials also.

Ngo Sovann denied that he defected to the CPP because of benefits: “They should not hide by saying that those who defected are all greedy people looking for benefits like that. This action is unfair to the people who helped them in everything, and to clear up their party name, they blame those who helped them for 12-year. The colleagues who defected were hurt, they don’t want benefits, and truly, at this hour, they don’t get anything yet.”

SRP MP Chrea Sochenda who is also the opposition leader in Kampong Thom province, commented about the recent defection of opposition officials by saying that: “I joined the SRP when it was first formed in order to fight against dictatorship, and because of my nationalist conscience. Because the SRP is a democratic party, the joining and the exit from the party is a normal issue.”

Prior to the election season, Funcinpec was the party which had the largest number of party defectors, and this led to a big party breakup.

At the end of last month, human rights groups said that the human rights situation and the public freedom of expression were curbed after Funcinpec lost its popularity. They are concerned that this situation will worsen if the CPP still continues to hold onto power by itself for a new upcoming mandate, and if there is presence of opposition, or if there no balance at the National Assembly.

KI-Media note: The Cambodia Daily reported in its 12 December edition that Khieu Kanharith declared on Monday that Ngo Sovann and Sok Pheng were both assigned government adviser positions, each will receive a stipend of $750 monthly salary. Hun Sen also came out strongly to defend these defectors, saying that they did not sell themselves out to the CPP. Hun Sen said that those who accused these defectors of selling out is an insult to these defectors.

In Khmer Society there is a rare people who talk true about themself. My question is that, if all those defectors thinks that SRP is injustic place, nepotism, unfair, not fit with your political ideaology why not you defect at the begining of NA mendate, why at this time which close to election 2008 you just do, people may thinks that you're think about personal benefit or you're not confident with your party or consituency to vote for you.

On the other hand, if Sam Rainsy knew that all defectors are useless why not you fight them before they defected. We heard same same complained about such as thing again and again. You're the leadership of a strong opposition party, you should appriciate all of them that they devoted their time, financialy to serve your party or RSP constituency, as at lease they spook for the people once they served as parlaimemterian.

At this point, we don't know who righ or wrong. I commend and support the citizen political rights. SRP should not worry because if all defectors are weak; sooner or later CPP will kick them out. Whereas RSP have a space for newer youth who have more interllegence, talent, competence, dynamic, vibrand to served as MP.

Everyone sake the nation although they work in defference political party or any other places.

Everyone is certainly entiled to their expressed opinions, whether implicitly or explicitly. However, if you're on the bottom of political hierarchy, you'll need to watch yourself carefully.

When Sok Pheng and his family were in Australia last year, he swon in front of Buddha at Khmer temple in Sydney that he will never defect to CPP and if he did let Buddha dissolve his life. If he had enough with politic he will quite politic and became normal lawyer.

Do you remember this Sok Pheng? You are so cheap, mate!

Hallo all,
If the politician like this swor in front of Buddha, it is only a show business and therapy. In fact, those are looking forwards only for US Dollars and Luxus.

Hey, I'm for Dollar (lots of it), srey (Vietnames -- not Khmer)and sra (Blue Label -- not cheap O.X.)for better life in Cambodia.

Enjoy life while your time has not yet expired!

Hey, the hell with Cambodia; we'll sell it to our big-shot foreign investors, and give the rest to Vietnam and Thailand.

5;25 I talked with Sok Pheng's brother and he said similar to your comment and he has no idea of what caused Sok Pheng to join CPP. Or maybe Sok Vann Kema might know, if you know Sok Vann Kema, could you please find out from him.

Hey, Sam Rainsy is McCain best mate. These two guys will be friends forever. McCain will do anything to help Sam Rainsy and Cambodian. Watch he will assist Sam Rainsy from the beginning to the end.

Some comments from defectors were made no sense.
QUOTE, " I join SRP because I want to fight dictatorship."

People in Cambodia and Human rights around the world knows CPP very well. If CPP is democratic party. It is because of economic progress CPP make, it is more sense only if they change their original ideas to fight corruption and dictatorship.

It looks like the defectors said one thing and their actions speak difference. If they would join HRP would make more sense to preserve their previous identity.

I have drawn a line for the non-communists and the communists. Defecting among non-communist parties are always acceptable, because they might not like the leadership of the party and still face the same opponent. But crossing the line to joint a pro-vienamese party is going to the opposit side to attack their own comrades is considering traitors to the Khmer Nation. Please never get confused about that historic line and don't ever cross it.
This is for Sam Rainsy :
Please don't be too rough and " trop orgueilleux." Your party should get better internal communication, starting from you. SRP is in tough situation in both choices : in or out of the government in the future. When the hungry mouse is in front of the trap with cheese; he thinks of getting the cheese by not realizing that he will get trapped. Once in the government; we "might" all get trapped.

Dear Independant economist,
In your comment, you say that: if Sam Rainsy knew all defectors are useless why he did'nt fight them befor they defected.
Let me tell you this, don't you know that Kieng Vang was not head of the SRP in Kampot province be he defected? don't you know that Sok Pheng was not head of SRP in Kg.Thom province? don't you know that Ngo Sovann was not head of the youth movement Of the SRP,
I hope this is clear for you.

Sok Pheng 's wife ran up a freind in Aust and siad this: " Pheng is very upset with Chhay ieng...he doesn't why Lok Pothean Rainsy only listens to the gambling addict making himself so unfAir to someone that had dedicated many years to the party...he feel sad making overseas supporters upset and disappointed..."

So, it is cklear that as usual it is Eng Chhai Ieng that has caused most of the problems. the SRP better fix it or disappear...
Rainsy can't just brush aside the issue and call those defectors opportunists bei ng bought . There are reall issues to solve.

I agree with 3:25am that Eng Chay eang is the trouble-maker in SRP. This guy is the gambling addicted. He was reportedthat he gambled on janaury 1st again. To keep eng chay eang is to distry SRP. Dont blame those defectors.

I blame all the Sam Rainsy defectors! Why do they choose to defect only when election is near? I can't believe that some of these defectors claimed that CPP has good leadership and bring economic development to Cambodia!

I like to see the families of the Sam Rainsy defectors get evicted from their land and their fucken houses get burn down too and how would these defectors feel if AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave commit such crime on their dirt poor friends, neighbors, and relatives in the name of economic development?

Let these Sam Rainsy defectors go check out the over the hill to see the green grass for themselves and what they see and hope for doesn't have much to offer anyway because the whole Cambodia is like a giant prison controlled by the CPP and the only way out is to break the CPP political machinery! Once you in the CPP and you will be on AH HUN SEN payroll and you will work for the benefit for the AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave puppet government and you can’t quit if you want to and your name will be used to cover up all the crimes and the scapegoats for the powerful CPP officials! The only way out is to commit suicide!

It is kind of strange don't you think when the Sam Rainsy defectors start to blame Eng Chay Eang for everything when they chose to join the CPP and why not join the Human Right Party or the FUNCINPEC? Ahahhahhaha

Hey! Money talk baby and the CPP have the fucken money and the positions! It seems that CPP have more money in moving their officials around without offending them than the Sam Rainsy Party!

I believe in any political positions and it must be moved around or rotated so that politicians don’t feel entrenched in their position for too long which can lead to corruption and ownership! Please remember that these politicians are there to serve Cambodian people and they are not there to make themselves rich!

It is kind of sad that AH HUN SEN created such political environment in such a way so that the only way to do serious businesses in Cambodia is to be top politician because it can protect one economic interest and that is why most Cambodian politicians are very wealthy!

The $750 dollar in monthly salary is just Ah Hanoi's trick to lure Khmer patriotism into its hook one by one until whenever all or most Khmer whose brains vow to push the Vietnamese back to Hanoi. Remember, this man, Khieu Kanharith is a Vietcong Hanoi agent. He does everything to destroy Cambodia, Cambodia natural resources and its people.

$750 buy out offer is a lot of money in the average Cambodian life. I can't blame anyone for taking the bride over their dignity. However I feel disturbance with the politican who uses money to gain the support rather the principal and ethnic integrity.

These detectors have no clues what Ah Hun Sen have in store for them. How ironic, just when the elections is approaching you bound to find a member of the SRP is being defected. Congratulations! You are now an accessary to corruptions, murders, human right violators and treasons. Words to the wise: if your soon to be boss is Ah Hun Sen; your unthinkable career move could be your last. You will be implicated by your boss one way or another. What a disgrace to your family as well as your country. Ever wonder why we loose our land? Ah Hun Sen kwack p'nate moy chumhiang, every time he turns, our neighboring country moved an inch closer. Phoke ah g'but chiat!!!
