Even though Chea Mony, President of the Free Trade Union of Workers in the Kingdom of Cambodia (FTUWKC), said that the 3-day strike which were to start on 27 March has been suspended, workers in about 30 garment factories in Phnom Penh and in the city suburb held the strike and refused to go to work. Because of the strike, Chea Mony said that he was busy all day on Thursday trying to visit all the factories where the strike took place to tell the workers to suspend the strike for now and wait for his negotiation with the Garment Manufacturer Association of Cambodia (GMAC) which will be held next Monday first. The strike was planned to demand that the factory owners increase the workers monthly salary by $5. Chea Mony hoped that this demand will be met and the workers have accepted to return to work this Friday while waiting for the outcome of the negotiation with the owners. Nevertheless, Chea Mony warned that if there is no salary raise, the union will hold its strike again.
