Sam Rainsy: “Our economy is weak”

Thursday, April 10, 2008
By J.M. Cambodge Soir Hebdo
Translated from French by Luc Sâr

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy continues to criticize Prime minister Hun Sen who just congratulated himself for the “good health of the Kingdom’s economy.”

J.M. (CSH): Is there anything inspiring you in the PM’s latest declarations in which he was congratulating himself about the good economic indices of the kingdom?

Sam Rainsy (SR): The numbers given by the PM reminds me of the statistical numbers published by the authorities of the former Soviet Union, 20 years ago. On paper, everything is going very well, whereas in reality, the large majority of the population still have bad living condition. This is what happens in Cambodia. The statistics are cooked up. This is the common action taken by all authoritarian regimes.

CDH: Can you give concrete examples about the cooked up statistics?

SR: Take for example the national poverty limit, in Cambodia, the government says that one person earning an income of less that $0.50 per day is living below the poverty limit. Thus, according to the government, only 33% of the population are living under the poverty limit. On the other hand, if we set this limit to $2 per day, as is done in the Philippines, then 80% of Cambodians live below the poverty limit. I don’t see any reason to cook up the number as the PM is doing right now. Another concrete example: the jobless rate. According to the official statistics, it would be only between 1 and 2%. This means that Cambodia is doing even better than the US or France. This is completely false. But here again, the government considers that a person working half an hour in the last 7 days, is considered as employed. To me, this is not a good criterion.
CDH: What do you think about the 10.1% (economic) growth rate in 2007?

SR: This number may be true. I don’t know … But for sure, this growth does not mean anything. It is neither lasting nor equitable. It only reflects the increasing disparity between a small minority of privileged people, and the huge majority of poor people. The distribution of wealth only benefits a small group of people, and it does not contribute to the well being of the population. The $6 additional pay given to the (garment) workers represents only a 12% salary raise for a base salary of $50. However, in two years, for the poorest people, price of goods increased by 100%. We are still far from a true accounting! The riel currency loses its value, that’s one of the reason why inflation and the purchasing power are affected. Our commercial balance for the garment sector is in great deficit… Our economy is weak. We depend on international aid and on the money sent over by overseas Cambodians.

What has Ah Sam Rainsy done to improve economy in Cambodia besides whinning, inciting protests and riots?

Anonymous said...

We don't care for Sam Rainsy help if he can just stop to deter business from Cambodia for our people, that will be enough help for all of us.

I don't know what kind of accounting system AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave government is using right now because it doesn't reflect the true picture of what is going on in Cambodia right now!

For those people want to know the real economic condition in Cambodia and I suggest to take a small trip to the local market and see for yourself what can dirt poor Cambodian people afford to buy! It had been a shocking experience for me!

It is very dangerous to lie by using statistic to confuse dirt poor Cambodian population and before you know it and the whole Cambodian economy will disintegrate!

Please do the right thing by telling Cambodian population the truth!

According to the real situation of the Cambodia at the current time, What Mr. Sam Rainsy said is acceptable. He is saying about what is happening in Cambodia society now. A very little progress has been made by the govenment to the poeple, but a huge part goes to the corrupt officials of the rulling party.

What is good nowadays is on the paper only. In reality, it is much different. When i read what Mr. Sam Rainsy said above, it reminds me about the end-year report of Mr. Sok Ann after the war between Prince Ranaridh & Hun Sen on 05-06 July 1997. He said that the govenment completed 79% of the state's plan. This achievement was perfect, which was rarely achieved by most of the countries in the world. It was ironical! That time, poeple were very angry and hate the govenment. Two motobike merchants hung themselves due to the loss of their properity in the war. Hun Sen's troop stole their motorbikes from the warehouse.

I was laughing when i heard the govenment's report. From that time on, i've kept in my mind that i should not believe the govenment's report. They just make it to fool the poeple only.

I knew it that you going to say some shit like that!

I check your link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECN3-2m2W54 and there is nothing in there that say about serious inflation that hit dirt poor Cambodian population the hardest and even if they have a job and the fucken job can't even support their living of standard and some of them are running back home to do farming!

I check your link http://www.voanews.com/khmer/080401-worldbank.cfm and they use the number in 2007 to justify what is going on in 2008? This is ridiculous! Just to let you know that past performance doesn't guarantee the same result future success!

You haven't proved anything to me!
I kick your arse again! Ahhahahhaha

We cannot compare the economy of Cambodia with the economy of France or economy of United States.

It is not serious and no sense, sam rainsy!

It is true that authoritarian government can cheat their own people s in many ways, among those are statistics. In reality, Cambodian peoples have never received from GDP growth at all as their standard of living is under poverty line or less than $1 a day.

I am grateful with economic talent of Sam Rainsy.

Leading with FEAR by current government of Cambodia

No mention the FEAR and PTSD of the KR. Our current government leadership has fabricated the situation to intensify FEAR through:

1. Repeating past brutality

2. Power monopoly of Hun Sen and his cronies in the government.

3. Policemen and military including higher ranking Buddhist monk leaders are not neutral and belonging to national institution. They are inclining to political party (CPP).

4. Major national mass media both TV and Radio are performing one side interviewing or reporting. No media ethic for those reporters being practiced to create justice and non-fear for the audience (listeners) at all.

5. Land-grabbing is likely doubling

6. Politically-affiliated judiciary system is widely conducted.

7. High ranking officers are not working for the nation and Cambodian peoples. Major part of their work is to favor political party (CPP).

8. Hun Sen's public political rhetoric is still showing the prospect of FEAR.

9. Many murderers are still floating without punishing. Culture of impunity is the main source of FEAR.

10. Dissents are always threatened. Opposition parties are being split from inside through threatening, positioning, bribing, or using government court.

11. Complex procedure of voting system in Cambodia is supportive to FEAR for less educated Cambodians.

12. etc

To help our populations which are very poor, I suggest to the government of Samdech Hun Sen, to reserve necessarily, every year, a quota of the job without big qualifications, without necessities of diplomas,or degree in all the public services for these poor populations.

It is the positive discrimination.

Anonymous said...

A quota of jobs not qualified in the administrations must be reserved every year for the poorest of our fellow countrymen is an effective politics to fight the social injustice and the poverty and of thus to give to the poor men the hope of a better future.

Anonymous said...

Here is a good idea to fight against the poverty which the government should operate!

Anonymous said...

Down deep to hell with the government of a puppet Hun Xen and his disgusting cronies. Long live the brave who sacrify their enless effort for the Cambodian people!

Anonymous said...

Hey, sam rainsy, people does not fight against the inflation with demonstrations.

Anonymous said...

All the demonstrations against dear life in all the poor countries degenerate often in popular riots that threaten political stability and social peace.

Only the political parties of opposition take advantage of this position without bringing concrete and serious solutions to the problem.

Sam rainsy, this is that you look for to the approach the elections of July 2008?

Anonymous said...

sam rainsy you try to exploit politically the poverty and the difficulties of people in front of the economic crisis, of the expensive life, to serve your personal political ambition.

You know well that you have no solutions miracles and serious to propose to go out of this crisis.

Anbody who has ever read my blog at www.about-cambodia.blogspot.com knows that I am sort of critical of Sam Rainsy for his populist pronouncements, but this time he has got it right. Who can survive even on $2 a day, and someone is considered employed if he/she works for at least 20 hours a week.

sam rainsy your strategy to conquer the power is very elementary.

Those who believe in your intelligence to come to power will be very disappointed.

Anonymous said...

you know to help clear some understanding and for other to understand cambodia, cambodia should have some sort of standard or baseline model of economy and standard of living like (pick a country to model the economy after), they way people can have some sort of expectation for cambodia to achieve the level of standardized demand. other, people like mr. sam rainsy will always have something to criticize cambodia about even cambodia have done its best, but certain individuals like mr. sam rainsy will never feel satisfied as long as cambodia doesn't have a baseline or measured standard to compared to or to base its gpa or income level on. so what are cambodia's expectations and baseline? gov't officials should be asking this type of question. they should have a national agenda as well for base the growth on. like i said, otherwise, the opposition will always have some harsh criticism on gov't. so gov't have to act on it to become better so people and standard of living for the country can be improved as well. god bless all.

What? What did you just say?

I am talking about hyperinflation in Cambodia and what the hell are you are talking about and what about the KR?

What about the Vietcong and they won the war over the KR and what about China and they won the war over the Vietcong!

Are we on the same page? It seems that we are not on the same page and that say a lot about your stupid brain!

arguing on the internet is like winning in a special olympic, even if you won, you're still retarded - a quote from the wise.

Sam Rainsy and his members are brave in leading the non-violent demonstration. Any casualty happens, Sam Rainsy himself and his members will be the first person to get injured. But many personalities scare the people that "SRP lead demonstration to hurt innocent, or demonstration cannot solve problems..etc".

In reality non-violent demonstration is a will and exercising of genuine democracy and providing the courage to the public to be aware about their basic rights etc

Non-violent demonstration is good for both peoples and government.
