JOINT PRESS RELEASE

CIVIL SOCIETY GROUPS STRONGLY CONDEMN
ILLEGAL EVICTION OF DEY KRAHORM

Phnom Penh, CAMBODIA - We strongly condemn the forced eviction of Dey Krahorm residents which began at 6 a.m. on Saturday 24 January, 2009. This was carried out by over 300 police officers and up to 500 breakers hired by the private company 7NG. It is yet another example of the violent evictions taking place across Cambodia which are in danger of destabilizing the country.

Today’s eviction was marked by excessive use of force endangering the lives of Dey Krahorm residents, and resulting in over 18 injuries - 5 of which were serious. It also saw the systematic destruction of private property, while the police and breakers hired by 7NG blocked attempts by human rights observers and the press to monitor and report on the event.

Further, the Dey Krahorm forced eviction resulted from an improper land transaction between so-called “community representatives” and 7NG. The forced eviction therefore had no proper or clear legal basis, and has violated the possession rights of Dey Krahorm residents which are guaranteed by the Constitution of Cambodia and Land Law 2001.

We urge the government to ensure that:
  • affected families are given immediate humanitarian assistance, including adequate food, water, shelter, sanitation, and medical care;
  • affected families are given just and fair compensation for the loss of their property;
  • the illegal activities surrounding the eviction are properly investigated and those responsible are held accountable; and
  • the trend of aggressive private interests overriding human rights is immediately stopped.

Will the group be able to help those being evicted. Just go straight to Hun Sen; he will surely help his miserable poeple.

The government and 7NG can commit violence against their own people in the name of money and yet get away with it.

it's about time this squatters must go, after 3 years, they are very greedy even though the gov't is offering compensation of $20,000 each to relocate to a permanent site for them. the shanty town was an eyesore and unsightly for phnom penh, especially in an area of gov't offices and very near the center of the city. i'm glad the gov't took action to force them to relocate. think of it this way, you wouldn't want them in your area either because of eyesore, unsightly and damaged the value of land and real estate in the area. thank you.

this squatter slum created mosquito infested living condition, very unhealthy, indeed. they must go. i, as a khmer citizen, do not want o see phnom penh look shanty like this again. phnom penh is becoming a big cosmopolitan, worldly city, and she cannot afford this kind of look anymore. god bless cambodia.

In the name of the development you buy these people out of $20000.00 you must be idiots,common if they buy you from your own house for that a mount of money will you be happy with that? If good government in the others beside Hun Sen regime ,they would build the housing with accesses to the school and close to the market,give them some transportation if needed and some capital to start their live again,this sound like this present government are so greedy do not care about any one but them self,I warn this regime ,they dig the grave for their own,Lon Nol regime did better than this and Lon Nol failed so please thinks again and again about Human power .

yuons migrants who come to settle in Cambodia have much more rights and privileges than Cambodian people. These yuons have land to settle, home to live and being jealously protected by cpp but Khmer people are chasse out from land and home by cpp. Why? If yuons are active and run policy, it is normal that yuon people benefited from this policy while Khmer people pass for passive victims of yuon policy

My beloved 3:16AM!

These poor and miserable Khmers must be heavenly blessful if each of them or even one family will receive 20,000 US dollars. Unearthly speaking, these languish victims might get a few hundreds dollar or nothing. Historically confessing, there is no justice for the poor!

I do favor development also but to chase Cambodian people out with gun and tear gas and bulldozer without fair compensation is not the way to go!

Having a place to call home is one of the basic needs for any human!

Is this the legacy of Hun Sen government?

3:16 & 3:27 (same person?)
Let me explain this in a form of human behavior. Sometimes you can't exchange money with your chilhood memory. A man's house is his castle. How would you feel if they do that to you and your love one? It's easy to judge when you sit in the comfort of your subsidairy low-income government project.
With your animal-like distinction's, I don't expect you to understand us..... human.

It is so sad to see that. The Dey kKraw horm was the yard of Mohor Srorm Tele Basak( The national theater of cambodia where was built by Wannmolywann). I have love this theatre so much, but unfortunately this one had been destoyed by the Vietnamese construction compapy who lead by KHAO. Khao is the Camodian-vietnamese-french. Please ask Mr. Laurent at 012 999900 for more infos. The lady who is in charge called KHAO Chanthamony. She is Viet- Cambodian is from France.

If some one need more info, please reply !

It would be better if I punch you in the throat, defecate in your mouth and demolished your house. What do you think about that? Your leader is going to take down your house too one day. Dumb phoc!!!

When I have seen this eviction hapening, as a Khmer nation I have a mixed motions whether or not these people are my belove khmer or the illegal immigrants? as I have listened to a young man report to RFA, I personally doubtful,it migh be more illegal immigrant than destitud Cambodian, if so I support this action taken by the GOV'T. Novertheless it's sad to see this kind of policy freguently occur on the powerless destitud people or (the shrim soup). Mr. Hun Sen Please care our Khmer people!

Some of fucking guys in this forum want Cambodia country going down like in the past.So all khmer people don't let those guys stay in our country and we have to kick them out of our country.If those guys stay in Cambodia they always make headach to the khmer government.

A potato digger is much better than a potato-head, is it?

A promise is just another promise as usual. People don't leave becuase they fear of not getting a cent not to mention $20,000.

I agree with 3.37 am. A good government should already have built another site for this for any relocation. Shame
