The January 7 holiday provokes mixed emotions in the Kingdom

PRIME Minister Hun Sen lashed out Tuesday against those who did not recognise today's Victory over Genocide holiday, calling them "animals".

"If you ignorant persons and extremists do not dare acknowledge the truth [of January 7, 1979], you are not humans, you are truly animals," Hun Sen said during an inauguration for the new Stung Meanchey bridge.

Hun Sen acknowledged that not all areas were liberated on the same day that the Vietnamese-backed forces toppled the Khmer Rouge in Phnom Penh 30 years ago, but he said that the day represented the end of the regime.

"This is the truth of history," he said.

On Monday, a statement from the Son Sann Foundation called October 23, 1991 - the signing of the Paris Peace Accords - the true date to acknowledge freedom from oppression because the agreement partially restored "Cambodian independence and sovereignty" after the "de facto Vietnamese Victory" in 1979.

"Instead of national reconciliation, [the January 7 celebration] further splits the unity of the Cambodian people and civil servants who are forced to parade at this shameful day," the statement said.

Son Sann was the founder of the Khmer People's National Liberation Front, which was one of four factions involved in Cambodia's civil war of the 1980s.

Opposition Sam Rainsy Party members have also said they would not celebrate January 7, which they insist has been hijacked by Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party.

But government spokesman and Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith told reporters on Sunday that the holiday is for all Cambodians because many movements fought for victory against the Khmer Rouge.

Those who are animals should be identified. Anyway Celebrating or Omitting it depends on who leads the country and which party holds as many as seats in the National Assembly. As long as CPP still wins the election, without doubt 7 January has been celebrated every year. On the other hand, in case (but no way) the opponent parties were almost fully trusted by the people, automatically they could erase it from the history of liberation or from national holiday.

Those who oppose the 7 January are legally former Khmer Rouge; are people who fled Cambodia before 17 April 1975; are basically opponent parties. They do not lose anyone in the killing fields, they pretend not to recognize it and mostly some oversea people who are trying to forget that date.

7 January is Celebration's Day that many people believe it saved their life. From that date till the First National Election was the period of some people like to say invasion. I believe it was a regime controlled over by the Communist Vietnamese Ideology. Whereas what you people shout out loud today in KI: corruption, human trafficking, drugs, or prostitution, is caused by small groups but powerful who you people identify as CPP people.

Thus in short there 3 things: celebration, regime, and current situation. I do not try to get these 3 into one otherwise I am perhaps one of some Khmer overseas or a man trying not to understand.

Happy New Year, Bravo 30th Anniversary of Liberation.

If we are academically thinking about the different between January 7 and October 23, we have to choose October 23.

- January 7 has marked the day of foreign invasion in Cambodia and it is ongoing dividing among Cambodian people.

- October 23 has marked as the day of unity, reconciliation of Cambodia and the day of Cambodia renaissance.

Hun Sen is influenced and ran by Khmer Rouge fundamental philosophy.
Hun Sen is weak like a whore.Khmer Rouge calls the shot from ECCC to human rights violation.
Simply,Hun Sen is a Khmer Rouge disciple from inside out.

Everyday he wished if he was Pol Pot.

Yes, I must concur that the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen is truly and purely "animal" himself. Suggestion: before calling anyone "animals," Mr. prime minister, you should look at yourself in the mirror, and then intepret the "reflection" you see yourself.

Hun Sen calls " animals" those who don't recognize the 7 January Victory.

What should we call Hun Sen who, from 1982 to 1989 sent all Khmers from all provinces to KO PRAM (K5)or the border areas, infested with land mines and malaria, to build the Strategic roads?

Many hundreds of thousands people, including women and Widows, died from work accidents, landmines and Malaria.

Is the CPP good towards Cambofdian people? Or is the CPP just very ferocious and hypocrite?

Today was a glorious day for our Fatherland.

I feel very privileged to have taken part in the ceremony to celebrate the rebirth of our nation.

We owe our deepest gratitude to those heroes who had risked their lives to give us a second chance at life.

The Khmer people who lived overseas during Pol Pot don't know what type of hell our people went through. If they see 7 Makara as anything other than a glorious day of liberation, then they're traitors.

Long live Kampuchea!

Hi everyone...
I think we can do all Khmers a really big favor if we carry out our discussion in civilized way. People all over the world can read our messages here. Please stop insulting each others just because of difference of opinions. We can get our points across more effectively with polite words.

For me, what's the big deal in celebrating 01/07 or another day as long as they don't use the state money. The opposition parties can celebrate 10/23 too if they want to as long as they don't use the state money either. Everyone is free to pick his/her own day. If you want to join then welcome aboard, if you choose not to attend nobody will bother you either...
The CPP who benefit greatly from that day, and millions of Khmers that suffered so much under Pol Pot's regime during that darkest period in modern history have good reason to celebrate. As the result of 01/07, Millions of Khmer have a second chance and VN has enormous influance over the current Cambodian government who owes VN a very big favor in putting them in power. Can anyone tell me how many times Mr. Hun Sen complains about VN encrochments into Cambodian borders? The reason is that Mr. Hun Sen doesn't want to follow the footsteps of Mr. Pen Sovann who was jailed and also kicked out the CPP club. If this celebration is about the liberation of Cambodia from Pol Pot why don't we hear the name of Mr. Pen Sovann mentioned during its ceremony? Oh well, enough said... Have a nice day, everyone!
