Media Groups Call for Editor’s Release

By Heng Reaksmey, VOA Khmer

Seven media organizations have sent a letter to King Norodom Sihamoni asking him to intervene in the prison sentence of an opposition newspaper editor.

Hang Chakra was jailed in June following the publication of a series of articles alleging corruption under the powerful Council Minister Sok An.

The letter asks that the king help intervene through his role as a member of the Supreme Council of Magistracy in interpreting legal matters at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court.

Pa Nguon Tieng, director of the Cambodian Center for Independent Media, said there had been irregularities in Hang Chakra’s June hearings. After the first hearing, after the defense had asked for more time to collect evidence, the court held a second hearing, sentencing Hang Chakra in absentia, he said.

And Sok Sovann, president of Khmer Journalists for Democracy, said the court should have used the media law passed by the National Assembly in 1995.

Chhoung Chou Ngy, lawyer for Hang Chakra, said he will wait for a response to the request before deciding on whether to appeal the 12-month sentence.

Gentlemen

By nature Mr Sok An is a gambler, he would risk anything for the sake of winning, and on top of that he has money and power.
In his blood, as he is ,he would not bow down by the laws and twists anyway he can. He is not a kind of leader with concience to stickby and to achieve national benefits with self sacrifice.
Mr Khiev Sam Phorn is the man with courage and selfishless and open-minded,known to many elites and cambodians, until guilty is proven.

Until cambodia become less interferred by Vietnam, then the truth will come out.

Very grateful to our king for his inititive to intervene the injustice APPILED by justice system in cambodia.Fullfilling his roles prescribed by constitution ensures that cambodia is marching towards peace as defined by 1991 agreement in paris.

This is not a survival of monarchy alone, but a survival of long suffering cambodians.

Long live the King!
God bless Cambodia!

Being a stooge of Hun Sen, I don't think the king will dare to pardon this poor news reporter. In Cambodia, Hun Sen is in command of everything. As such, don't hold your breath and count on the king for help unless Hun Sen give him the green light to do so.
