Demonstrations Stem from Victims: Opposition

By Heng Reaksmey, VOA Khmer
Original report from Phnom Penh
20 October 2009

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy told the National Assembly on Tuesday that if the ruling party wants to reduce demonstrations, it should cooperate with the opposition.

The Assembly is debating a controversial law on demonstrations that opponents say gives the ruling party opportunities to crack down on legitimate assembly.

Sam Rainsy said the opposition acts as the voice of victims, but that cooperation from the government would mean “no demonstrations.” The opposition was willing to work with the government to share information and end demonstrations, he said.

Nuth Sa Ann, secretary of state for the Ministry of Interior, welcomed the idea, but said in the past cooperation has not been forthcoming.

The ministry needed information from all sides, including non-governmental organizations, he said, but “we never receive that.”

Nhiek Bun Chhay, a lawmaker for the Funcinpec party, said talks should take place before a situation leads to demonstrations, which can be sensitive and spread into instability.

National security would be improved by reducing demonstrations, he said.

The Assembly concluded debate on the fourth of six chapters of the draft law Tuesday, with 92 ruling Cambodian People’s Party lawmakers approving and 14 opposition lawmakers voting against the chapter.

It is a good move from SRP for common benefits of cambodians.
Clearly suppression is not the appropriate measure, and surely RGC stops treating any dissent as enemies which ended up with killing field in KR.

Disagreement is a conflict of strategy and,or interest. Conflict of strategy can be varified and also conflict of interest can be identified.
As long as both parties or any party persue common interest, then resolution can be achievable.

This cooperation is best practice in most developed world.

No, Neang Sa,
I do not agree at all. A country can only reduce demonstration if there is;
-NO Human right abuses
-NO Injustice
-NO Corruption
-NO Public insecurity problem
-No Unfair treatment
THe opposition and the ruling party cannot work together 100% at all. If they do, it will not be a democracy system at all.
THe duty of opposition party is to insuring the public interest. If the ruling party is working in the interest of the Nation, the public will support them. But if the ruling party has worked in the destruction of National interest, the public will look at opposition to lead them for a revolt or demonstration. THe opposition can also enforce the ruling party to upheld their election promises.
Recently, Hun Sen has said that as long as he is the Prime Minister, Cambodia will be political stable. But international communities will not value to Only Hun Sen as Prime Minister at all. They will value on the 5 No points which I have mentioned above. That is why Cambodia has failed in the past 16 years to attract coporated investments from abroad.

Rainsy,

You are a big fucking looser. The opposition party should play a role of win-win negotiator for all Cambodians peacefully, dispite how Ah Khwak Hun Xen controlled the political situation. And you must prepare your political strategy to win the next election of 2013.

Excellent Sam Rainsy,
I am impressed with your new gesture and conciliatory politic.

I have been waiting for sometimes to hear opposition speak like you did.

Chinese sage: Be a way of water that will never be stagnant in moving earth out of its way.
Be way of silk that beautify you in peace,in war it will protect you as armor form enemies arrow.
Go opposition!!!!

Rainsy! You're never win election even after the death of Hun Sen. The reason is Viet will not allow you to achieve it. Hun Sen's son is ready to be in charge. He will be minister of Defense after Tea Banh go to hell and then PM job next after that.

Hello! again Areak Prey

I can't agree more to your 5 points mentioned. It would be a perfect world to live in.
I will never support violence.
I would rather see political parties understand each role to play, than seeing exertion of blind power to supress one another.

If spirit of nationalism exists, reconcilliation is better which it will lead political movement to its maturity.

Regardless any political party is in government, code of conducts or Ethics is the key to abideby with any profession, and hopefully with a new approach of applied buddhism will assist a smoother transition.

Thank you for voicing your concern.

Dear Sir, Dear Mr. Sam Raingsy,

Please be polite towards every body. Do not use bad words and cursing somebody. You are down because of your bad manners and wording that caused you a bad luck.

Be a good leader by listening to everybody, learning history of leaders in Cambodia, learning from the actual leaders by keeping their good behaviour, their speeches and leaving out their bad manners.

Using your ability to learn and to tell people of your general policy of your party and your future prime ministership...and do not curse anyone or any country leaders.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Here are some few points that SRP need to work on:

1- Need to change party name to the name that represent all Cambodian not individual.

2- Need to find the common ground with the govt. to work on, so you can show to Cambodian that you care for all people in Cambodia.

3- Your party has been in the country for a long time if you can't convince young people to follow you, then you need to take a close look at the strategy. You need to show them that there are hopes for them in the future. Mobilize people from the ground up, especialy young people from University.

4- Don't just scream at the Govt. show them your alternate solutions.

5- Just remember this, Cambodian will not give a dime to Political party but they will donate $100 USD to the temple easily. If you know Cambodian culture you should understand this part.

As far as I can remember, Cambodia was built by Cambodian:

- Rich people donated their money to build roads, schools and bridges and they put their name on it because they believed in giving.
- Villagers gathered to build road at night. I used to be part of that and it was fund.
- School children helped clean up the city road or clean up the creek for farmer on Sat. and Sunday.

These are some activities that can help build the country and create team work.
