Cambodia's main opposition party on Tuesday asked the government to suspend demarcation of a contentious border with neighbouring Vietnam, according to a letter seen by AFP.
Lawmakers from the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), whose leader lives in exile in France, urged Prime Minister Hun Sen to allow a review of border markings to "properly and fully respect the territorial integrity of Cambodia".
The Cambodian premier maintains close relations with the Vietnamese regime and Sam Rainsy, whose party shares his name, has repeatedly accused the government of ceding land to Vietnam.
"We, the lawmakers... would like to request the government to suspend the process of planting markers along Cambodian-Vietnamese border," the letter said.
The move follows a government lawsuit filed last month against Sam Rainsy accusing him of publishing a false map on his party's website that disputed delineation of the border between Cambodia and Vietnam.
The opposition leader was in January sentenced in absentia to two years in prison in Cambodia for intentionally uprooting temporary border posts and inciting racial unrest.
Two villagers were also found guilty in the October incident in which Sam Rainsy led protesters to uproot six border markers in southeastern Svay Rieng province, alleging they had been illegally placed by Vietnam.
Vietnam condemned the saboteurs' act as "perverse, undermining common assets, violating laws of Cambodia and Vietnam, treaties, agreements and deals between the two countries".
But the SRP's letter to Hun Sen on Tuesday asked that independent experts, lawmakers, journalists, and civil society representatives be allowed to monitor and verify the demarcation process between the two countries.
Cambodia and Vietnam officially began demarcating their contentious border in September 2006 after decades of territorial disputes.
Anti-Vietnamese sentiment in Cambodia is rife, fuelled by resentment at Vietnam's expansion over the centuries and the feeling that Cambodia is losing some of its territory.
Vietnam and Cambodia share a 1,270-kilometre (790-mile) border, which has remained vague since French colonial times.

it fair to call for a meeting, however, keep in mind the concept of timeliness, ok! can't delay demarcation forever, you know, as it is necessary for the future of cambodia. if you start, you must finish it, don't leave thing hanging unfinished in the process, ok. show some ethical conducts and not so much authoritarian; otherwise, sam rainsy is a dictator as well! don't be a hypocrite all along, ok! people aren't stupid, you know! it goes both ways, think about it!
It's not a raw accusation, but the real fact is that Youns are land thieves; history has proved it.
What is wrong with AH HUN SEN to keep the border demarcating process between Cambodia and Vietnam in such secrecy?
The independent experts, lawmakers, journalists, and civil society representatives and Cambodian people have the right to monitor and understand the process and if the border demarcating is not done in the right way it will only promote more future conflict and the grievances of Cambodian people for the lost of their land will never heal!
Good idea SRP. Since this is a national interests, if the opposition party oppose the agreement then everything will be unconstitutional and must not be recognized by all Khmer Nation.
This demarcation work is being done by the few CPP elite, and in the interests of the few CPPs and not in the Khmer national interests, hence must be nullified and remains unfinished business between Khmer and Vietnam
KHMER Angkor.
I'm very happy to hear that Yuons steal Khmer lands by planting some border posts in wrong places because this proves that they are not CPP boss, CPP doesn't receive orders from Yuons and Yuons don't own Cambodia.
PM Hun Sen must be wise in protecting the Khmer integrity and Khmer remaining land. Hun Sen must understand the heartach of all Khmers due to so much loss of the land to the neighboring countries.
Look at all borders not just those lying along the Thai borders. Vietnamese are more active in incroaching the land of the Khmers. Beware of your own record in the Khmer history book.
Correction: "encroach"
I am responding to the first writer on the top who says “people aren't stupid”. Hun Sen is not stupid, but he is blind man who cannot read the history of his country and see the suffering of his farmers whose farm lands are robbed or stolen by Yuon.
Hun Sen and his cronies are just Yuon Hanoi's puppets who lack the will to defend his homeland.
Why everything the CPP do are kept in strict secrecy? Whose interests are they serving? Are they Khmers or just yuon slaves? I don't really care if they want to serve their masters but they should put Cambodia's interest first.
How can Hun Sen and his CPP call SR traitor? the only crime that SR commited is trying hard to protect Cambodia territory. Traitors should be the ones who give away our land to yuon, not the other way around. If you say that everything you do is for the benefit of Cambodia, why not let every process of delineation be as transparent as it can be? Or is it the same thing as your anti- (or pro-) corruption law? Everything the CPP are doing are for their own pockets first, who cares about anything else? Right?...
