Theary Seng's Comment on Christian Forgiveness article

30 July 2010
Theary C. Seng

I am humbled and inspired by the article "Killing Fields Verdict Fuels Christian's Forgiveness" and Silas's Christian charity and forgiveness, a faith I share. Forgiveness (a burden lifted) is the very heart of healing. And we, individually, need to extend this forgiveness (genuine and at our own pace) in order to be healed.

Here briefly, I'd like to make a distinction between vertical justice and horizontal justice.

Vertical justice is the imperfect (proximate, selective) work of the State toward the perpetrator; but ultimately, it is the perfect work of God toward the perpetrator. In the case of Duch, the State (i.e., the ECCC) handed out the imperfect verdict of 35 years, reduced to 19 years after the legitimate reductions for cooperation and time served in the illegal prior detention at the military compound. I am and others are saying that this is "too imperfect". But we have the assurance of perfect justice to be meted out by God (which may be a surprise to those who do not share the Christian faith of "amazing grace" if Duch is truly a Christian!).

Horizontal justice is the personal relationship between the victim and the perpetrator; here, it allows room for forgiveness. But the individual's forgiveness is independent and separate from the State's or God's role in meting out vertical justice.

Thus, I share in the personal forgiveness of personal horizontal justice between victim and perpetrator; forgiveness does more good for the forgiver than the forgiven. Many times, the perpetrator could care less. But this forgiveness does not take away the role of the State to exact its vertical justice (imperfect as it may) and ultimately, God's perfect justice.

In our deep disappointment, we are saying that the State (i.e., ECCC) has disproportionately responded to the gravity of the crimes committed by only exacting 19 years for crimes against humanity. This in no way take away from the need of individuals at one moment in time to forgive when s/he is genuinely able and ready.

another well written piece from Theary Seng. khmers in my community still agonise over this 35 year old catastrophe, and most will never recover from the trauma. while khmer Christians (and i am one) can receive healing from the Holy Spirit, my Buddhist mother simply cannot find peace in her soul despite doing buddhist things, like reciting pali mantra, giving alms etc.. she struggles with the idea of forgiving our former tormentors. and yet as a christian i know this is the only way towards restoration. So i keep praying that Jesus will show Himself to my mom (as he has done for me) and heal her. i would be grateful if other khmer christians who read this will also ask Jesus to help my mom. thanking you kindly.

Theary please keep doing what you're doing. Many Khmer in Cambodia and abroad appreciate what you're doing.
Again, thank you for caring.

In the pass, there were no state laws, or may exist and not strong enough to be fair and just, we needed then religion laws.
Now, in 2010, we have country laws, international laws, we could forget religion laws.

I love it! In a country where Buddhism is the majority, it take a Christian to make sense of it. Is that what you called it? I am sorry, I survived the KR regime, but I am not about to switch my religion.

oh damn god... every time, you talk about god.. but when millions of ppl were being killed, the damn god is blind and deaf.. i don't know if he's up in the sky or down at the earth crust, but i know for sure he's damn stupid if he ever existed. if he allowed that atrocity to happen, let men give the judgement.. for either forgiveness, revenge or justice, men is the man to do the job; not the headless god.

and to compare forgiveness btw the stupid religions? Don't fight each other, fight me and fight your own soul and judgement.

it's really insane..

Theary - don't side Christine God on your side, you just insult more than 90% of Khmer population who are following Buddhism - What you are saying is like you are telling that they are follow the wrong God (which Buddha is not God). As a sub-intellectual as you are - do you how many people that were, are, and will be kill in the name of God (Jesus, Islam)? Just look at the Ben Ladan - the Islam against the Christine - which he call Jiha? Khmer Roughe was fighting for equal and for classless society (which by killing the intellectual - to make everybody equally poor - which you know the story. I don't have to tell you that)....Don't insult Khmer of what they believe... I could just say Christine God is like Hun Sen...Just following him and you will be save from your sin? No wonder you committe a lot of sin and know that your God will forgive you!...

if you're truely believe in Democracy...you have to allow other people to have freedom of speech, freedom of religion...

By the way...one of your interview...you were stand in the Buddhist temple and wearing black (In the West - color black mean you're suffering for the dead) - did that mean you were suffering for the Khmer dead, or just another Kodack time for you...

They did not. Before Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia there were three main religions in Cambodia : Buddhism,Islam, and Christianity. All these religions are good, but some believers are bad.During Khmer Rouge era, they did not believe any religions. 95/100 Khmer people were Buddhists including Mr. Duch.Buddha told us not to kill, not to steal, not to lie,and so on.But the believers did not mind. Help yourself first,God will help you later.Do somethings good first, you will reap them later.Good deeds get good deeds, evil deeds get evil seeds.

Hello Theary, Now you are talking like a True Christian :) Good, forgiveness is good for all the victims. I lose many close relative during the KR regime, some may even died in S21, but I forgive Dutch. At least he admitted his crime and beg for forgiveness.

Whereas other religion is exclusive, based on race or ethnic identity, Christianity is the most embracing of all races and classes, identifies with the poor and most vulnerable, gives second and third and fourth and fifth (...) chances to imperfect people and has at the heart, LOVE.

Well said 9:59PM. Only Jesus died for humanity. Only God and Jesus Christ teach forgiveness and able to forgive any sinner who ask for his grace and mercy. We otherwise should learn to forgive those that wrong us.

The worst crime ever committed in history is the crucifixion of the Son of God.

The ultimate victory ever won is Jesus rising from the dead.

The greatest news ever given is for all of us who are not perfect, including the foul-mouthed among us, is forgiveness...for all the nasty things we do to each other and ultimately to the Creator God which we harbor deep down in our hearts... which leads to peace through Jesus.

6:38PM,
Until 2010 that Cambodia just has a country laws? Why it takes Cambodia so long to have laws? From a generation to another, from a regime to another, Cambodia has its own laws. In the past, I mean from 1970 back to the long past Cambodia had its constitutional laws which were created in accordance with monarchist rules. From 1970, after the coup d'etat, some amendments were made due to the fact that Prince Sihanouk decoded not to return to Cambodia but to join the Khmer Rouge instead. In the KR regime, perhaps all amendments were abolished due to the fact that the regime needed to purify its new society that was no longer in need of Buddhism.

"Forgiveness", the word also exists in Buddhism. The Buddha was a compassionate being, he forgave all the sinful and savage men who had tried to harm him. It's a religious law, but "forgiveness" shouldn't be applied in constituinal laws. A man must pay the price of his own crimes, because such crimes as Duch committed were premeditated ones.

There is neither forgiveness neither repantence in Buddhism, hun.

Buddhism and the LAWS of the real world are the same. If you violated the laws, you got the punishment; nobody could forgive you.

vertical + horizontal = the Cross ?

There is no difference between religion and human laws, if you're guilty by human laws you will punished in human prison and if you're guilty by religion laws you will be punished by going to hell.
Then you must not beleive because like that you would be punished only by human.

many readers may have misunderstood Theary about her opinion in this matter. I totally agree with her. Forgiveness exists in both religions. forgiveness is good for the human well being, meaning mind and body, but we should let the law runs its couse. In Buddhist region, Duch committed sins. no matter what religion he switched to, he will have to pay for it in his next life as a living thing. He can't undo it or be taken away by anyone or god. to personally revenge on to him would be committing sin by the individual. So, let support the UN laws, but don't commit crime. I also personally believe that many Khmer Rouge who committed many killing and came to the United States never admitted their wrong doing to anyone, unlike Duch, they still believe what they were doing were right.

Hay Theary, don't make this sound so fancy - It is not "the gravity of crimes committed", it just "crime" against humanity(period)! This absolute crime that KR had committed should be punish absolutely by the "law"...he is not trial by God! Why you just made the statement that God will do the altimate justic (due to the vertical justice of the state - it wouldn't matter much?..)...In addition, whether by "words" for forgiveness or by "God" forgiveness - it would not errase the deed that had done and the live that he had taken. Theary, within your heart - are you truely believe that due to the "vertical justice" of Cambodian government...we shouldn't be worry because the "horizontal justice" by God will take care of it? I don't think you do! Unless you want to kiss govt.'s ass and supporting their so call "vertical justice" as you had put it...you just prostitute your soul...

Jesus Christ (mean) the one who can save.
Jesus is Greek word, translate from
the word Joshua (Hebrew) mean to save. and translate into khmer word are: God of Love=Preah Se-Ar-Metri,
Remember, when Budha pass away, he told Ananan that "you have to wait for the one who will come and that is the loving God who will save you

This is only the first punishment for Dutch--so he gets a 19-year sentence in and he will die in prison, the second one is awaiting him in hell where he would be burn alive in an eternal fire pit.

I believe that UN judges have been swayed by emotional influence from Dutch as he has asked for leniency on his punishment.

Should Dutch be forgiven for crime against humanity? Absolutely no. This man must take the responsibility of the crime he committed; and so he should not be given a lenient prison term. How could a criminal like Ductch who kills thousands of innocent cambodians be handed 19 years in confinement?

I have seen and interacted with your kind. So spare me the patronizing. You just make me want to puke.

12:21 PM - this is only happen in Cambodia, because they know that the highest up in the current govt. committed mental torture crime against their own people (event a textbook mention something about his performent - would has the law to pull the books out of classroom, so that no Khmer students can read anything bed about him). Now the question is which regime - the KR or the HS regime committed the highest crime against their own people? Mass Killing quickly(KR) or the one that torture and rape off Khmer identity slowly (HS)?

2:08pm - so just because i'm a khmer christian you call me a two-faced hypocrite? i wonder what makes you think that way. is it because i serve people in my community for free? or is it because i've just built a school for children who otherwise will have to walk 20km everyday to learn kar khhar; or is it because i don't get drunk and beat my wife? or is it because i refuse to steal state asset or abuse power when my colleagues do? may be i should become "normal" like you ?
