Cambodia said it would press Thailand to sign a permanent ceasefire at a regional gathering next week.
Prime Minister Hun Sen said Cambodia would urge its neighbour to agree a peace deal during a meeting of foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Jakarta on Tuesday.
But Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva rejected the idea of ASEAN involvement in resolving the dispute, which erupted into armed clashes between the countries earlier this month.
Four days of heavy fighting near a 900-year-old border temple left at least 10 people dead and displaced thousands of families on both sides of the frontier.
"During the upcoming ASEAN meeting, Cambodia will request that a ceasefire agreement be signed between the Cambodian and Thai foreign ministers under the witness of ASEAN or the ASEAN chair," Hun Sen said at a press conference in the Cambodian capital.
He also confirmed that his country will call for ASEAN observers to come to the border area to help ensure a ceasefire holds.
The two sides are at odds over an area near the Preah Vihear temple, an 11th-century clifftop ruin that belongs to Cambodia but whose designation as a World Heritage site sparked the ire of Thai nationalists.
Both countries blame each other for the crisis.
Thailand has repeatedly said it wants to resolve the row bilaterally, rejecting Cambodian requests for third-party mediation.
"I do not think we have to talk about this during the ASEAN meeting because we are not the ones that started the fight," Abhisit said on Thursday when asked about a ceasefire deal.
The United Nations Security Council on Monday urged the two nations to establish a "permanent ceasefire" but did not endorse a Cambodian request to deploy UN peacekeepers in the contested area.
It did, however, express support for mediation efforts by Indonesia, the current chair of the 10-nation ASEAN group.
The World Court ruled in 1962 that the Preah Vihear temple belonged to Cambodia, but both countries claim ownership of a 4.6-square-kilometre surrounding area.
Hun Sen told reporters legal officials were currently preparing documents to bring the case back to the World Court to ask for a clarification concerning the disputed plot of land.
"We will return to the Court to have it resolved," Hun Sen said.

What about ask Thailand to sign an agreement to stop claiming preah vihear and the surrounding area, 4.6km, and stop invading Cambodian's territory.

People listen UN is know everything but UN as well as American and the world of modern democracy hate Hun Sen regime so much. American, UN use thai to eliminate Hun Sen regime out of the world only, that's why American, UN act like that. Please look at recently regime of Tuniasi and Egypt behind the scence is American and UN. Trust me, I am old enough and have heap of experinced in UN.
The idea is to wipe out all Hun Sen regime from the world and China can't help Hun Sen either because China know that China won't win the war with US. The military technology of China today are copy from US since 1945. US military system are a head China over 60 years.
Cambodian people should also wipe out Hun Sen regime as well as his 400 relative out of the world because they are the source to make cambodian people suffer until today.
Why do Kos Trol, sea and lands proximately over 10 000 km2 have been lost to Vietnam by who treaty? Why don't Cambodia goverment transparency explain to cambodia army at front line and the whole nation about this? Why don't they include this into education system? Why?

Cambodian army at front line suffer under rain, wind, bullets, bombs,lack of foods, lack of nutrition, their families have no health care help, no securities after they die but a very small group eat well, sleep well, sleep in first class hotel with air conditioning with young girls message, have super health care from oversea medical treatment, they are billionairs, millionairs who sell out the country to be rich and make cambodian people suffer everyday as cambodian people know already.
Who signed the treaty 1979-1985 that result lost over 10 000 km2 of Cambodia??? Why don't they transparency inform all Cambodian and cambodian army at front line about these issues? Why don't include Kos Trol ( Kos Trol size is bigger than the whole Phom Phen with planty of natural resources ) in education
All Khmer should bind together to fight the invader. Not all khmer abroad hate Hun Sen. The best solution is the take the case to the Hague. The last resort is WAR.
It seems HUN SEN GOVERNMENT is hitting all the right notes of late. Use your head more than your hands... Cambodia will come out on top for sure...

Are you really Khmer who has a Khmer heart and born on the Khmer land? When it comes to national defence, we all have to be in solidarity and unity in order to fight againt the thief aggressors (Siem).
I personally hate Thai, but I also believe that Hun sen and his thugs cpp cronies cause more suffering for people more than Thai.
So i believe that Thai kick Hun Thugs ass badly, because Hun sen alway strong against Khmer people who have no arm force or weapon, but when Hun thug turn against Thai, who have much bigger arm force and advance weapon it seem like Hun thug begging Thai to sign cease fire agreement? why not be strong Hun sen, that use to bullied Khmer people and than Thai.
