LOWELL -- A Cambodian opposition leader and two other members of parliament will be in Lowell Saturday to discuss ongoing human-rights abuses in Cambodia .
Sam Rainsy, leader of the Sam Rainsy Party and generally considered the main rival to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, will appear with fellow SRP legislators Tok Vanchan and Tioulong Sumura, Rainsy's wife, on Saturday, from 5 p.m. to midnight at the Sunny Da Restaurant, 450 Chelmsford St.
Rainsy, formerly a member of the Cambodian National Assembly, has most recently been living in self-imposed exile in Australia . In March, the Cambodian Supreme Court upheld Rainsy's conviction on charges of inciting racial discrimination and uprooting border markings with neighboring Vietnam .
Shortly after the court's ruling, the National Assembly released a statement revoking Rainsy's "rights, privileges and membership as member of parliament."
The conviction upheld by the Supreme Court carries with it a two-year prison sentence and, when combined with an unrelated 10-year sentence for publishing a false map of the border with Vietnam .
Since 2009, Rainsy has maintained he was leading demonstrations on the Cambodian-Vietnamese border to protest what he believes is Vietnamese encroachment on Cambodian land.
A Rainsy Party spokesman criticized the National Assembly decree as a political move by a parliament dominated by MPs from Hun Sen's ruling Cambodian People's Party. In the past, the Rainsy Party and the NGO Cambodian Center for Human Rights have asserted that Rainsy's convictions were an attempt to keep him from participating in Cambodia 's 2013 national election.
Hun Sen, 59, has held power in Cambodia for a quarter-century and, according to some, has vowed to remain in power until he is 90 years old.
Rainsy plans to discuss those issues, as well as what he calls ongoing human-rights abuses in Cambodia , suppression of the Cambodian media and the future of the country.

if sam rainsy is working to right humann rights, reforms, etc, then i'm for it, however, if it's about his ownn political ambition that could lead to division in cambodia, then i prefer not, really! just don't mix thing up and treat it as a case by case basis, really! of course, cambodia have to respect human rights and care and responsible for its constituents, etc, you know! somebody got to do a check and balance in all of this, just not exploiting chaos, though!

We fortunate to have an opposition, who has major concern for the people of Cambodia and has no reservation in criticizing Hun Sen's corrupt policy and has no regards for human rights. His efforts hepls Hun Sen in check just a bit.
i think the problem with sam rainsy case, they are like people without land or gov't, in other words, refugees, if you fail to understand that then nothing will be effective or count; you got to have a sound, mechanism to make a change as a political entity or people will not listen or vote for you for you have no more, as simple as that, really! sam rainsy do not know how to put in place an existing mechanism in cambodia, yes in cambodia, not overseas and so on ok! that's why people see his political party as weak, ineffective, no good, etc, etc, you know! wake up people and stop your stupid, silly struggle to no avail, really! the time to struggle and work hard is during election period, not afterward, ok! get educated already, really! again, stop being so stupid, really! show khmer people that you guys are smart, wise, enlightened, educated, etc, etc, ok! there are more to cambodia than you and i, ok! don't forget that, ok!

they say people may have good idea, etc, but if they put it into use, then it is as good as useless, it is, you know! that's what sam rainsy party is useless, maybe only good as activist, but other than that, useless, if you ask me, really! got o have an existing mechanism in place before you can get legitimate support either from the people in cambodia as well as they international community at large, ok! and it sam rainsy party continue to ignore that due to whatever attitude or narcissism they have, then of course, it is still useless forever, you know! get better educated and enlightened already by now, ok! time and cambodia waits for no one, really! wake up and smell the coffee of reality, ok!

In the case of Ho Sok (executed on 7 July, brought to Watt Lanka on 8 July); of Seng Phally, Chao Keang, Chao Tea and Thong Viccheka (executed on 5-6 July and brought by the police to Wat Unalom on the morning of 7 July - see cases number 13-16 above) and in the case of a fifth corpse which was brought to the same pagoda on the same morning, but which could not be identified, the police ordered that cremation of the bodies be conducted without question and without proper cremation permit.
Between 9 and 11 July, according to a variety of reliable corroborating accounts, the bodies of 4 and probably up to 22 soldiers were alleged to have been executed in Pich Nil and burned
