On the 4th day of the KRT preliminary hearing held on 30 June 2011, Nuon Chea’s defense lawyer informed the court that his client asks that the judges investigate Vietnam’s role before and during the Democratic Kampuchea (DK) regime era and not just during the 1975-1979 era alone.
Nuon Chea’s lawyer raised the necessity for this investigation because numerous decisions made by the DK regime were taken because of Vietnam’s policy.
Nuon Chea said that the bombing [on Cambodia] must be investigated also in order to learn clearly about food [shortage] problem prior to 1975. If it was true, what is its effect on the Cambodian people? Does the DK regime have the ability to resolve this issue or not?
Nuon Chea’s lawyer indicated that it is also necessary to investigate the KR army commanders from the eastern zone who [claims that] the cadres have no role to exercise their power.
Nuon Chea also asks for an investigation into Duch’s statement claiming that he (Nuon Chea) was savage in the crimes perpetrated in the Tuol Sleng jail.
Khieu Samphan also protested to the hearing chamber saying that the names of his witnesses do not appear the tribunal’s roster, but the majority of the prosecution’s witnesses are listed. He added that there were some names of his witnesses, but they turn out to be prosecution witnesses for questioning instead. Khieu Samphan promised that he will turn in his list of witnesses in writing one more time. He asked the hearing chamber to listen to his side also if it wants to know clearly because in the past people talked too much about him.

Only the truth will tell the true intends of other countries involved; and so the new generations of Khmer children can truly learn about true and sad era of Khmer history.
By telling the truth, their victims will find some kind of closure and their children to truly learned what really happened in KR era and why Cambodia fall victim??? so this will not happen again.

Two weeks ago I heard a radio interview of an Australian Radio and a Russian former diplomat saying that
Hun Sen, Chea sin and Heng Samrin are too scared to have this khmer Rouge trial to take their full course to trial all these suspect criminals of the khmer rouge. The killing fields has started from 1975. and these three men have left Cambodia until 1978. If the court could go into it full course, the result may change to different direction. Nuon Chea has said that all killers are enemies of the people. Who were they? Most of them have been arrested by Nuon Chea'group and were jailed in Tuol Sleng.

why khmer this KR leader was so ignorant? i think because their thinking is out of wack! yes, some khmer thinking is so outdated. however, i believe the foreigners should some role in the KR killing fields as well. khmer's culture dictate to us to respect and follow the leaders, so, that's where the ignorance came from, i think! for a change, i think khmer people should think differently and should learn to think critically and analyze for themselves, instead of always taking orders due to greed, ignorance, hatred, revenge, power hungry, breaking the law, etc, etc, really! i say stop the outdated thinking already, it won't make our country progress into a modern nation, if he are slowed by outdated thinking too much, you know!
To see the whole picture, we have to look from all sites. I wonder how far this trial can go and I afraid that Noun Chea will be assassinated. I hope UK protects the prisoner safety.

While acknowledging the mass atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge regime, we should never forget the level of atrocities committed during the US secretive bombing of Cambodia from 1968-1973. A declassified telephone discussion between Henry Kissinger and General Alexander Haig, Nixon's deputy assistant for national security affairs, recorded that Nixon had ordered a “massive bombing campaign in Cambodia [to use] anything that flys [sic] on anything that moves”.
The map of US bombing targets released by Yale University’s Cambodian Genocide Program shows that more than half of the country was affected by the indiscriminate bombings. Professor Ben Kierman, director of the program, puts the casualties figure from the bombing at 150,000 deaths, while Edward Herman, a professor of Wharton School, and Noam Chomsky put the toll at 600,000 using figures provided by a Finnish Commission of Inquiry.
Based on this, we can never naively claim that US bombing led to the mass executions by the Khmer Rouge or refuted the regime's mass atrocities. But, to certain extent, the blanket bombing, which directly led to the destruction of livestock and agricultural land, could have definitely played a role in the mass starvation.
From new data released during the Clinton administration, Taylor Owen, a doctoral student at Oxford University, and Professor Kierman noted that 2,756,941 tons of bombs were dropped on Cambodia.
To put the figure into perspective, just over 2 million tons of bombs were dropped by the allies during all of World War II. The bombs dropped in Cambodia represented about 184 Hiroshima atomic bombs combined, making Cambodia the most bombed nation in the world. Based on the new data, Professor Kierman also stressed that the casualties might be much higher than his earlier predicted 150,000

1. ECCC has been afraid of Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan speakiing out about 1.7 million Cambodians killed during 1975-1979.
2. By law , it is strongly against any law by refussing accused's witnesses.
3. The real genocide of Cambodian between 1975-1979 are still outside this ECCC.
4. This is 1 of ECCC and CPP dirty tricks and many more will be used in upcomming not full public hearing of Case 002.
