More than 100 villagers living near Sihanoukville blocked a national road leading to the coastal town yesterday to protest against tycoon Kith Meng’s proposed lakeside ecotourism
development, which they fear will rob them of land they have farmed for decades.
In a letter sent to the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy in March, obtained by The Post yesterday, Kith Meng, president of the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce, requested a 99-year, 82-hectare concession for an ecotourism development on land around the Boeung Prek Tup lake.
“I want to tell you, Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, that the Boeung Prek Tup area is the biggest freshwater lake in the province and [the lakeside] covers about 82 hectares,” the letter stated. Kith Meng, who is also chairman and chief executive officer of the Royal Group, said in the letter that the Boeung Prek Tup lakeside had not been protected and that his company had the skills and budget to invest in the area.
Sak Sophal, a representative of villagers from around the Boeung Prek Tup lake in Mittapheap district’s Commune 3, said residents had blocked National Road 4 yesterday for about three hours in order to appeal to Prime Minister Hun Sen for intervention.
“We protested by blocking the road because we don’t want to leave our land … because we have lived here since 1979,” he said, adding that villagers would continue to protest until a resolution was reached.
Residents blocked the road until police and military police officials moved them to the side in order to reduce traffic jams, Sak Sophal said.
Commune 3 chief Kan Loeng said yesterday that he did not plan to intervene on behalf of the villagers because they had refused to listen to the authorities.
“They didn’t listen to us when we told them we will intervene with their problem,” he said. “They need help from Prime Minister Hun Sen.”
Kith Meng could not be reached for comment yesterday.

everytime camobdia is having development somewhere, people are always scramble to have a piece of the economic pie by claiming this or that! i don't think it's gov't abuse, it's more like people could be greedy and unruly, etc, you know!

I think our people have been absorbing enough suffering, which created by corrupted people. It is time to defend our right for survival.
I don't think poor people are too greedy because after all they just want to survive .it's the other way around instead that all tycoons are greedy .They don't want to share the living that is why there's revolution in the world that poor and rich are too far apart.
In the US when the Gov't want to expand the city or highway, they always pay the citizen who live at the area the Gov't chose to develop. But in Cambodia the powerful people use violent and pay no money to those poor people to find places to live. Well we now reach 7 billion people and may be this is a way to kill the weak ones.
Yes,when the political ruler government find an opportunity for hi/own party sakes. They came with an excuse that they are in term of development better than the residents that live there for years.They refuse to pay and want it free.Think they are smart,but they ripped people off their land and their property.UNITED AND GUARD YOUR LAKE! He always copies news from here to post in his facebook profile to promote himself, but right now, he tries to removed and blocked anyone who dares to reveal his con activity particular he tries to hide what he has cheated his wife (Sreypov Chea) by having a girlfriend (Sokunthear Sam) behind his wife back. Now, his girlfriend had ran way from him after she knew his cheating.
A con man Pang Sokhoeun as well as KI-Media like to insult to the government officers who have affairs, but himself does even worse than other people. What a shame!

When one person had posted in KI-Media and accused that a con man Pang Sokhoeun is a brother of Som Ek (former Chief of Tiger's head sign guerilla, who was arrested and put in prison by Cambodian government) during that time, a cheater Pang Sokhoeun came to deny in his blogs immediately and had pointed the blame to Mr. Sourn Serey Rotha, but this time, he has bury his head in the sand because he cannot deny the truth that he has cheated his wife. Right now, all he can do is removed and blocked anyone who dared to reveal his cheating.
