Re: Silencing Cambodia's Honest Brokers

Dear C,

As a Cambodian American I would like to thank Elizabeth Becker for reporting this problem to the world to hear. This is another method for the Cambodian government to silence the voice of the people. It is so unfortunate that this new law on civil society is proposed during this time, when the world is in an economic crisis. It is probably not by coincidence that the Cambodian government chooses this moment in time to try to pass this law because they know the world is now too busy with their own problems than to worry about Cambodia, a small country of no significance to them.

As an observer from afar I feel that Cambodia has missed many opportunities to right the ship after the election of 1993. I was fortunate to be in Cambodia in February 1992 to witness the arrival of UNTAC in Cambodia. That was the moment I felt Cambodia had a chance to rebuild the country the right way by adopting the model of the Western world such as the respect for human rights, social and equal justice for all, and the concept of democracy. My younger brother, Hann So, took his personal time off from his work to build the Khmer Institute for Democracy (KID) with Julio Jeldres in Cambodia. I was a constant contributor to the bilingual journal Khmer Conscience that my brother created. We introduced the concept of democracy and tried to teach the Cambodian people who had been oppressed all their lives under the communist rules that it was alright to speak up, to participate in rebuilding the country, and not be afraid to vote for whomever they wanted. This may seem banal for people who live in a free country, but for Cambodians who had been oppressed and taught to follow the communist party line, this freedom was all new to them. We were very enthusiastic for the future of Cambodia.

I thought that after Ranariddh won the election he would bring in the right people to help him rebuild Cambodia. I was so disappointed when many of the people he brought in to work in his government started to behave like hungry animals. They sold everything in sight and put the level of corruptions in the Hun Sen government prior to the election to shame. The corruptions were widespread and became the norm. Now it's a culture that is almost impossible to get rid off. It's becoming a cancer in the Cambodian society.

The population of the Cambodian generation that lived under the Khmer Rouge genocide era is now approaching old age. Cambodia is now entering a new phase. Most of today's younger generation has never experienced the atrocity of the Khmer Rouge or even war. For Cambodia to prosper and progress in the twenty first century, the country must reform some of its laws to attract business investments. Cambodia is a small country and does not reach a critical mass yet (in term of consumptions and productions) for the other countries to justify their big capital investments without getting the stigma of condoning and acquiescing to the culture of corruption. It is the duty of the government to clean up the image of the country and set up the rules of accountabilities. Corruptions must be eradicated as much as possible and the standard of the Cambodia education must be constantly elevated so that it can attract high tech industry investments. The culture of cronyism must be replaced with merits based on qualification.

Thank You,

Kenneth

Agree Cambodia has no moral courage to see and do the right thing beside sucking up to whoever handing out donation to its government without condition. This behaviour inherited from the most corruptive man alive namely Sihanouk since he was the king and head of government back in the 60's.The Corruption was Sihanouk and Siahnouks was the Cambodia thus Cambodia was the corruption, afin!

Corruption was the root cause for all turmoils and revolutionary movements that embolded Yuon occupation of Cambodia.

It's wrongly to say Cambodia people did not understand the democracy. People had fought for reformation and democratzation of the country since Sihanouk was made the monkey King by France back in 1941. The commentary seemed insinuating that Cambodian parents had not talked nor taught children about self-righteousness in addition to the declared national religious rules, Buddhism, which the followers must be restrained within the 5 or 8 precepts from do harm to selves and others.

The hyporitical monarchists seemed to forget that the tragedies and destruction of Cambodia started with the imbecile Sihanouk who was so corrupted that no matter who or what took hold of Cambodia as long as he was put to rule.

Hun Sen or RRidh and followers are the monkeys. So it is not hard to figure out why monkeys see monkeys do.
Afterall Sihanouk is responsible for all the misfortunes and suffering for the Cambodia people.

6:58pm,

Why you blaim only the King to take all the bad behavior of curroption in Cambodia? This is sound like my six years old -- when he does something wrong, he said his big brother make him do it. Worst yet, when the husband hig his wife, he said because the way she behave that what make him hit her! Come Mr. 6:58pm the corrupt people have to take responsibility as to what they are doing, rather that blaim others for their behavior. Take responsibility of one action and stop blaim others!!!

The Hun govt. is a group of ganster that selling Cambodian resources. Hun Sen regime is an organize institution ganster...call what it is! It is time that Cambodian people acknowledge this!!! Don't let Cambodia turn into Lybia...Mr. Hun Sen, better get out before they put you into international court as criam against humanity! Whether killing people by the bullete or acessinate people of their dinity...these consider as criam in 21st century!! Mr. Hun for your own good and your family -- you better get out! Middles is a good enough example for you to learn Mr. Strong man that want to rule Cambodia untill you are 99 yrs old!

Ranarih/Chakkrapong were scumbagged, womenizing, pot-belling dollarizing since there were at O Smach camp before 1993 election. I was not suprised they and their clans went on rampage like crazy and hungry animals in Phnom Penh when they got a chance to recuperate the long loss in jungle 1980-1993.
Want Ranarih and Chakrapong to rule Cambodia again, Cambodian people will have only their underpants left...

Hun Sen is not a good leader but he is a decisive, tough and meant. Hun Sen operates the theory based on kill first ask question later. Strike hard on your enemy, reward handsomely to the followers.

Who will be a good leader of Cambodia. None... A generation X gap. This young generation of Cambodia is being built to find one... the movie will be shown in the theater near you in the next 15 years.

If we keep on fearing Mr. Sen, Khmer will continue to rule by this ganster. Sooner or later, people will up rise. The question is, will Khmer allow Mr. Sen to continue to rule on their head with fear for the rest of their life, or is it about time to say enough is enough! I want my family to live but not at the price of selling my soul!! Khmer people, if you continue to let Hun Sen to do this to you, he will! And he will notonly rule your life, but it will be your children life as well. Are you continue to allow this ganster to rule your children in the 10 or 20 yrs down the road? Or are you read to fight for a better future for your children? Only each and everyone of you can answer this!! And only each and everyone of you can liberate your country. Don't look to out side for help. Help yourslef, before it is too late.
