“If you evict them, your people will be poorer and poorer. It’s not a good kind of development.”
Local residents delivered a petition with more than 1,200 signatures to Phnom Penh city hall yesterday, urging governor Kep Chuktema to make Phnom Penh an “eviction free” zone.
The petition, called “Declare the city as an eviction free zone,” calls for an immediate end to all evictions within city limits.
“Forced evictions are a violation of human rights,” the petition declares.
“More than 150,000 people have found themselves without a home and many of them have been forced or coerced into leaving. Others have been traumatised by having to watch their homes and belongings be destroyed by excavators,” it continues.
Tep Vanny, a representative of Boeung Kak lake villagers, said that people wanted development in the capital, but not the kind that involves forced evictions.
“We are hurt when our homes and belongings are destroyed,” he said.
Lim Sambo, a former resident of the Group 78 community in Chamkarmon district, said that the $8,000 he received to evacuate his home was not enough to buy land in city centre, so he was forced to relocate to the outskirts of town.
“My living conditions are worse. When I lived in Group 78, I sold porridge and Khmer noodles at my house, so I earned enough money to support my family,” he said. “Now I don’t earn enough from selling coconuts, because I have to pay for petrol to travel into the city everyday from my house in Dangkor district.
“I want the governor and our government to develop the city without forced evictions,” he added. “If you evict them, your people will be poorer and poorer. It’s not a good kind of development.”
Phnom Penh governor Kep Chuktema and his deputy, Nuon Someth, could not be reached by the Post for comment yesterday.

Samdach Decho Hun Sen and his families, relatives and friends have billion of billions of American dollars but majority Cambodian people are poor. That is not fair isn't it? Cambodian people are wondering where Samdach Decho Hun Sen and his families and some CPP groups get the money from.
Gaddafi has 0ver 60 billion of US dollar and Hun Sen has similar figure to Gaddafi.
Gaddafi said the same thing as Samdach Decho Hun Sen but at the end all his trustworthiness bodyguards are running away from him. Samdach Decho Hun Sen bodyguards are not much difference from Gaddafi bodyguards too; even some of them are Viet.
All Samdach Decho Hun Sen bodyguards know very well that Samdach Decho Hun Sen is a traitor, a killer, a murderer. A lot of innocent bloods all over Samdach Decho Hun Sen. You are not a holy man that they have to die for you to be rich! Understand Decho Sen!

During 1997 Samdach Decho Hun Sen killed many Khmer people during the kick ass Prince Ranaridth and not even including K5 and many more so on and so on ...over 30 000km2 of Cambodia area given to Vietnam by Samdach Decho Hun Sen with his full hands.
Gaddafi had not given any lands to other countries as Samdach Decho Hun Sen.

welfare for few years to those poor

Lao govt has done a good job.Lao is

Ah coward Decho Hun Sen, Mr Sam Rainsy asks you to sue him at France court about you murdered Khmer people. Why don't you dare to do it as you have done at Cambodia court?
Being a strong man as well as Prime Minister of one country, you should not be coward to face the real justice at France court or International court. Unless, you are the real murderer in Cambodia that is the reason why you fear of Mr Sam Rainsy at real and fair justice court.
