The highest-ranking surviving member of the Khmer Rouge regime has denied that he and his members were ''bad people" while at a UN-backed tribunal currently underway in Cambodia.
Former Khmer Rouge officials, Nuon Chea, Khieu Samphan, and Ieng Sary are all on trial for genocide, religious persecution and torture.
Nuon Chea was the first of the three to face questioning from the judges on Monday over their roles in the deaths of nearly two million people.
He is seen as the chief ideologue of the brutal 1970s movement.
Nuon Chea told the court he wanted to fight injustices and blamed Vietnam for Cambodia's suffering.
"I don't want the next generations to misunderstand the history," the 85-year-old told the court.
"I don't want them to misunderstand that the Khmer Rouge are bad people, are criminals. Nothing is true about that.
"It was Vietnam who killed Cambodians," Nuon Chea said, without explaining which period in history he was referring to.
He also blamed "bandits" who, infiltrating the Khmer Rouge before the movement came to power, were responsible for the arrests and mass purges.
Hundreds of Cambodians have packed the Phnom Penh courtroom, hoping to find some justice over the country's "Killing Fields" era, and to see Nuon Chea in the dock.
Led by Pol Pot, who died in 1998, the Khmer Rouge emptied cities, abolished money and religion and wiped out nearly a quarter of Cambodia's population through starvation, overwork and execution.
In this first session, the trial will focus only on the forced movement of the population and related crimes against humanity.
"I have devoted myself to serving the country," Nuon Chea said.
Khieu Samphan is expected to give evidence in a trial within the next two weeks.
He has previously said he was a patriot who was unaware of the mass killings going on.

I was about 5 years old when the youn/vietcong accent soliders came to take my grandpa and one of my uncles away that night...'day of disarm'. I was so confused...other people were cheering.
I remembered there was a massive panic in the house but I did not know what it was all about. I remembered one of elders was saying in a calm tone of voice--maybe not to scare the kids--hide all the guns...hide the guns. My grandpa and uncles worked with general Lon Nol.

ever read "alice in wonderland"? well, cambodian society under the stupid, primitive KR regime was like that, absolute rule, obey or off with your head style of medieval society. it was like that, so they killed and abused millions of people that way. yes, the KR leaders were responsible for taking cambodia back to the stone age, primitive society, you know! and those who they think is not embracing their new ideology, they killed or abused them, simple as they, you know!

The real cause of why Khmers keep fighting with Khmers.
First, Khmer people have to know these facts first:
- The United Nations planned to make a trip to Cambodia on January 15th 1979 to check the Khmer Rouge.
_ Vietnam knew about this trip in advance, so Vietnam made a full scale attack on Cambodia to stop the United Nations from monitoring the Khmer Rouge.
- As we all know Khmer Vietminh (Yuon's brainwashed students) committed most of the killings during the Pol Pot's era.
By invading Cambodia, Vietnam was able to put an ignorant, uneducated person named Hun Sen in charge of the country.
Because Hun Sen is Vietnam's slave, he has served only Vietnam's interest. That made Khmer people so mad. That why we all see like Khmers always fight with Khmers
Now you can see, WHO MADE KHMERS FIGHT WITH KHMERS?
It is time for ALL OF US to understand Vietnam's tricks. This Devil Vietnam is the root cause of Khmers fight with Khmers.
