VOV/VNA (Hanoi)

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Mem Sam On is visiting Vietnam to attend a meeting marking the 33rd anniversary of the Victory over the Pol Pot Genocide (January 7, 1979).

At a reception in Hanoi on January 6, the Cambodian Deputy PM expressed her sincere thanks to Vietnam for organizing the meeting.

She said the Cambodian people will always remember the great support from the Vietnamese Party, State, army, experts and people during their struggle against the Pol Pot regime, as well as for national independence, peace and development.

She also affirmed that Cambodia is determined to boost traditional ties of friendship and comprehensive and long-lasting cooperation with Vietnam.

Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh praised Cambodia’s achievements during its national development process, saying that Deputy PM Mem’s visit will help strengthen the traditional ties of friendship between the two countries. He said he hopes that the two Governments and peoples will continue to cooperate closely in all fields in the future.

Meeting in Hanoi marks victory over Pol Pot Genocide

The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO), in coordination with the Vietnam Veterans Association and the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Association, held a meeting in Hanoi on January 6 to mark the 33rd anniversary of the victory over the Pol Pot Genocidal regime in Cambodia.

Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam On, and other officials were present at the meeting.

President of the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Association Vu Mao reviewed the glorious period in the fine development of the traditional friendship between the two countries.

In 1975 Pol Pot carried out policy of genocide and killed more than 2 million Cambodian people during his reign, in addition to launching a bloody war to violate Vietnam’s sovereignty.

To fight against these savage actions, and in response to the call from the United Front for the Salvation of the Cambodian Motherland, the Vietnamese Party, State and People’s Army defended its right to protect the country and helped Cambodia escape the genocide. Victory was achieved on January 7, 1979, ending the bleakest page in Cambodian history and opening a new era of independence, peace, freedom and development.

Vu Mao said we should remember the martyrs, advisors, volunteers and people who overcame difficulties and stood side by side with the Cambodian people in their struggle for independence.

Over the past 33 years, neighbourly bilateral ties, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation and long lasting sustainability have been developing well and the results of cooperation in all fields have been positive. These achievements have brought peace and happiness to the people of both countries and stability and development in the region.

Men Sam On emphasized that the Cambodian people consider January 7 as their second birthday. If there was no Victory Day, Cambodians people wouldn’t have present days.

She affirmed that Cambodia is determined to consolidate the ties of good neighbours, and promote traditional friendship and long lasting comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam.

She also expressed her respect and sincere thanks to late President Ho Chi Minh, who contributed to building the Cambodia People’s Party and Cambodia’s current peace and stability.
