CPP TRIES TO PREVENT SRP FROM FILING CANDIDATES FOR UPCOMING COMMUNE ELECTIONS
Using money and threat the ruling CPP has been trying to prevent the opposition SRP from filing candidates for the commune elections due to take place on June 3, 2012.
Political parties have one month - until March 3 - to file a list of candidates - whose number varies from 10 to 22 - in any commune where they want to win councilor seats among Cambodia's 1,633 communes.
As for the recent January 29 senatorial elections, the two main competing parties in these communal elections are the CPP and the SRP. Only these two parties can boast an organization strong enough to effectively cover the whole country, with enough human and financial resources enabling them to file candidates in all Cambodia's 1,633 communes.
The ruling CPP's strength all over the country is not something surprising because, as a former communist party, they have the state apparatus, machinery and budget at their disposal. But for the opposition SRP, a noticeable presence even in the most remote parts of the country implies a solid network of dedicated activists and courageous supporters nationwide that can resist destructive pressure from the authoritarian CPP.
Over the last 30 days the CPP has been trying to buy and/or threat SRP members in a large number of communes in order to make them suddenly defect and withdraw from opposition lists of candidates or to entice them to sabotage or destroy SRP administrative files just a few days before the March 3 deadline for submission of candidate lists requiring huge paper work and Kafkaesque red tape.
The SRP will organize a press conference in the next few days to expose CPP maneuvers and other tricks intended to discard the SRP from the election process.
As already seen at the recent Senate elections, it is in Kandal province - where Prime Minister Hun Sen lives and votes - that the CPP is doing its utmost to (unsuccessfully) hamper the SRP. A reward of up to US$5,000 is given to any SRP member who could steal opposition lists of candidates and bring them to the CPP. The court is also being used to intimidate SRP members with political charges being levied on them under the disguise of criminal offenses such as "incitement" or "defamation."
