A SRP MP expressed his concerns on the planned construction of a hydraulic dam in Koh Kong by a Chinese company.

A SRP MP and a group of researchers performed a visit to an area planned for the construction of a dam that will straddle Koh Kong and Thmor Bang districts, Koh Kong province, on 16 April 2012.

SRP MP Son Chhay said that he and his colleagues will conduct a several day-long study on the impact from hydraulic dam in this region.

The study region is located in Stung Areng which the government and a Chinese company plan to build a hydraulic dam in the near future.

Son Chhay: “People living in the Stung Areng region are concerned about the construction of a dam on the Stung Areng River, because it will impact the forest, the nature, the vegetation, wild animals, fish in the river could become extinct. Not only does this impact the livelihood of the people, but it could also lead to the extinction of rare animals as well.”

He added that the study is conducted following concerns from the villagers and multiple reports about wild deforestation in this region: “We know that, not too far away from Stung Areng River, there is also a dam on the Stung Tatai river that was already built. A number of deforestations are also taking place there.”

After completing the report on this issue, Son Chhay said that he will send it to the government to help resolve these problems and to take immediate measures against these problems.

In the past, Hun Xen used to react to criticisms on environmental impact from hydraulic dams, he used to call them extremists. Nevertheless, Hun Xen recognized that all developments cannot avoid environmental impact.

The government has not confirmed about the construction of a hydraulic dam on the Stung Areng river yet. However, Suy Sem, the minister of Industry, Mining and Energy, confirmed that the dam along the Stung Areng river could be completed by 2017: “In 2017, the Chhay Areng hydraulic dam will produce 100 MW of electricity.”

Villagers indicated that government working groups came to inform the villagers and the local authority that the government plans to build a hydraulic dam on Stung Areng River at the beginning of 2013.

The construction plan will affect three communes: Chumnoab, Prolay and Thmor Daun Pov. All three communes are located in Thmor Bang district, Koh Kong province.

Within Koh Kong province, 3 hydraulic dams are planned for construction or are under construction in 3 areas: (1) Tatai river dam with a capacity of 246 MW is located in Bor Russey Chrum commune, Thmor Bang district and in Tatai commune, Koh Kong district; (2) the Russei Chum Krom dam located in Pak Klorng commune, Mondul Seima district, and has a capacity of 338 MW; (3) the Stung Areng dam with a capacity of 100 MW is located in Thmor Bang district.

We need to stop the Chinese Dam in Cardamon Mountains area. It is not acceptable for the uneducated CPP officials and Hun Sen to give the permission to Chinese firm to build the dam that is very dangerous to rural people and wild animals.

Please tell the UN, USA, EU Union and International Communities and ask for their help or interventions to stop this dangerous dam construction.

It is the most stupid plan that we have ever heard of because of the stupid greedy CPP officials and Hun Sen who are so dumb and uneducated.

We need to have a massive protests across the country and in Phnom Penh to stop Chinese and CPP to build the dangerous and destructive dam. Please stop the Vietnamese advisers to Hun Sen who have been suggesting dumb CPP officials and dumb and blind leader Hun Sen (Vietnamese dog) to do the dirty plans for their CPP pockets and destroy the natural forests and wild animals living there.

Again and again, stop the Vietnamese advisers who work for stupid and dumb Hun Sen by suggesting Chinese to have permission to build such the stupid dam in Cardamon Mountains and forest area where people and wild animals living there.

Call on Angis Jolly who is the UN ambassador to tell the UN and world to know this poisonous plans were suggested by the Communist Vietnamese advisers working for blind and uneducated PM Hun Sen as well as the dumbest CPP clans (hidden Yuon faces).

I'M VERY SORRY TO HEAR THAT. FOR THE SAKE OF THE CAMBODIA FUTURE. CAMBODIAN PEOPLE INSIDE THE COUNTRY MUST STAND UP FOR THEM SELF AND REMOVE THE HUN SEN'S REGIME. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO CHANGE CAMBODIA AND LEADERSHIP.

Could everyone for a moment and think to themselves before you go calling these CPPs uneducated or slaves. You're making yourself sound like the uneducated ones. The appropriate word for these CPPs is selfishness. Greed if you will, because an uneducated person will never get as far as these guys. So please continue your study abroad and come back with knowledgeable thoughts.
