But the simple fact that such killings still take place speaks volumes about Cambodia. Sadly, the likes of Brad Cox have no shortage of subjects to work with.
Next month, American filmmaker Brad Cox will travel from his base in Bangkok to New York, where he will receive a prestigious Peabody Award for a documentary he made on the assassination of the Cambodian trade union leader Chea Vichea in 2004.
Two men – Born Samnang and Sok Sam Oeun – were charged with the murder, but a confession was later retracted amid claims they were tortured. Both men also had alibis and witnesses who said they were somewhere else at the time of the killing.
Both are widely held to be innocent, but the government insists they got the right people, prompting Cox to produce “Who Killed Chea Vichea?” The movie is banned in Cambodia. Nor is the Cambodian government impressed with the award, claiming Peabody is “a politically motivated” institution, and that Cox’s film is little more than “propaganda.” (The Peabody Awards are the oldest electronic media awards in the world).
But as Cox was having a suit made for the big night, word had filtered through that another prominent environmental activist, Chut Vuthy, had been gunned down after photographing forests in Cambodia’s remote south, which is known for illegal logging.
“He reminds me quite a bit of labor leader Chea Vichea. Both were outspoken, both were willing to stand up for what they believe despite threats and harassment, and both paid the price for their convictions,” Cox said.
“I think there’s a message in this for Cambodians, and that’s to keep your head down and your mouth shut. Most people take this message to heart. There are very few that don’t and that’s what makes guys like Chut Vuthy and Chea Vichea special.
“They gain the admiration of the Cambodian people, but also the ire of the powers that be. And as much as I hate to say it, I doubt this tragedy will be the last.”
The Chut Vuthy killing is having explosive ramifications, and the parallels with the killing of Chea Vichea are enormous. Chut Vuthy had been prominent in uncovering the secret sell-off of state forests, illegal rosewood harvesting and land grabs in the area where a Chinese dam is being built.
His family, human rights groups and long time observers are troubled by the official explanation: That the military police officer who killed Chut Vuthy, after realizing what he had done, turned an AK-47 on himself and pulled the trigger twice.
Also present when Chut Vuthy was confronted by the group of military troops demanding his camera were two journalists. Neither saw who shot who, and they were eventually lucky to get out unscathed after the intervention of outside police. But the simple fact that such killings still take place speaks volumes about Cambodia. Sadly, the likes of Brad Cox have no shortage of subjects to work with.

I agree with you. We should know better by now. We need to protect Mr. Sam Rainsy. The world should be on alert and know what the real killers of CPP regime in Cambodia, there are many hidden Vietnamese/Yuon who are playing the Khmer/Cambodian roles to kill the important Khmer intellectuals.
Let's say this. Why the hero of Vietcong such Ho Chi Minh was not killed if Vietnam had no other country (such as Chinese, Russia, USA, and so on) colonized its nation? Looking at Cambodian situation today, the country is under the Yuon/Vietnam control and Hun Sen is a puppet of Vietnamese masters in Hanoi and the heroes of Khmer/Cambodian nation are not safe under the secret and hidden Yuon/Vietnamese faces among Khmer Military Uniforms or Forces. Several of Vietnamese agents have been currently hiding in the current CPP regime who are fluently speaking, writing, and reading Khmer/Cambodian language, having high positions in the CPP offices, having powers. You know who they are. If Hun Sen tries to break up with Vietnamese masters in Hanoi, then Hun Sen will be in danger of Vietnam Political Assassinations. If Hun Sen was assassinated by Vietnamese masters in Hanoi when he wanted Khmer/Cambodian people to be free and independent from Vietnam. So, he would be considered a Khmer Hero. However, Hun Sen has still played the double roles, once he doesn't want to die as a hero and on the other hand, he loves wealth and power to make him look good and feel good. He has never stepped down long time ago or he acted stupid or became so stupid and dumb as a Vietnamese puppet, a leader of Cambodia serving his Vietnamese bosses in Hanoi and hurt his own Cambodian/Khmer people. This idiot Hun Sen did or doesn't understand anything at all and has no education at all. He would never understand anything history of Cambodia and even knows nothing. He talked stupid and rubbish since his Vietnamese bosses told him what to do to fool the world and brainwashed Khmer folks who have limits of Khmer history and educations. Now, we can see that many Khmer/Cambodian students do have good and quality educations at all from High Schools to Universities, the skills to do the jobs. Khmer bloggers, readers and Khmer folks should know these so far about current situations in Cambodia today. As Vietnam has been controlling Cambodia since 1979, everything such as development, rebuilding nation, infrastructures, transportation, educations, health systems, etc., have been slowing down and going backward. Every new buildings or skyline buildings were not well engineered and designed under the architectural standards. There are many historic buildings from French and Khmer Architects that have been taken down. So, Khmer people should know these. All of these problems have been so real coming the Yuon/Vietnamese dirty and secret destruction to Cambodia on purpose. So, you should know that Vietnamese masters and followers including illegal Vietnamese settlers in Cambodia are laughing out loud or they are giggling quiet inside their hidden places in Cambodia.

It is timing so all Khmer poeple, please waking and send the messages to the world and let the world know as soon as possible. Make our voice to be heard very loud and clear so that the UN, USA, EU countries, International Communities can hear us, Khmer people, very clearly and loud. Then, they will put the extreme pressures on Vietnam or Vietnamese leaders in Hanoi to stop the secret violence, destruction to Khmer/Cambodian nation and her people, political assassinations of prominent Khmer heroes by borrowing dumb Khmer Rouges of Vietminh (Vietnamese puppets), illegal Vietminh (secret Khmer Rouges agents) to kill in order to tell the world that Hun Sen and his fake Khmer official or military forces or policement (who are hidden Yuon/Vietnamese agents in Khmer/Cambodian Uniforms or the U.S. Uniforms to fool everyone foreigners and gullible Khmer people) that killed and murdered their own people and Khmer Nationalist. Yes, Hun Sen has been currently under the very touch controls of Vientamese bosses and hidden Yuon forces in Cambodia. For now, Hun Sen is enjoying either the good life with a lot of wealths and powers and he forgot about the sufferning and bloody murders of his own Khmer people. He is very stubbor and coward, not caring about Cambodia because he blindly believes that Cambodia is stuck with Vietnamese control and he stupidly decided to sale Cambodia to foreigners, mostly to his evil Vietnam bosses in Hanoi. He did not learn the history or he did not have education at all, but only a fifth grade and dropped out. He joined the Khmer Rouges of Vietminh (Ho Chi Minh) that fought against French in Cambodia or Indochina. Yes, Hun Sen is very evil, blind, coward or he is nothing for Cambodian/Khner Nation and her people. He will be spit and thrown with cow poops when he dies. Let's stop right here and let all Khmer bloggers, young generation or people think and talk about what need to be done to save Cambodia/Khmer country and her people. It is not too late yet, Khmer folks so please wake up and do something. It is very serious.

The so-called the government is the puppet political tool as some Khmer know that was created by late Ho Chi Minh to put Khmer and Lao under their annex and exterminate ethnic Cambodian.
So the so-called government or Hun Sen government only killed:
1. Chut Wutty.
2. Chea Vichea.
3. K 5 killed so many Cambodian.
4. And more and more will be killed by the so-called Hun Sen government.
Are we waiting for them to kill us more or it is time for all Khmer home and abroad to take serious action to prevent more Khmer being killed and save Cambodia from being swallowed?
The Khmer people outside and inside
of Cambodia do not well organize yet,
what can they do?
The Khmer abroad are still in beds,
then in Cambodia they are afraid of
Hun Sen to kill them.
The Khmer overseas should get out
to protest a large amount of people,
not just few dozen people.
